John 13:34… “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.”  (NKJV)

Loving one another, was not a new commandment that Jesus was trying to convey to His disciples…  Way back in the O.T. we find the same command, in…Leviticus 19:18… You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.  (NKJV)

Jesus had already given us His first and second most important commandments, in…Matthew 22:37-40…where we are to love Him with ALL of our heart, ALL of our mind, and ALL of our soul; and the second most important commandment is to love our neighbor as our self…

But this new commandment Jesus was presenting to His disciples (at what is now called the last supper), expressed that His disciples (and ourselves), were to love one another; “as I have loved you”… This love Jesus was trying to explain, was going to be shown by His sacrificial death on the cross that would happen the next day… Jesus’ love was so great for all of us, that He was going to die on the cross for the sins of people that had no love for Him… As a matter of fact, Jesus had love even for those who were crucifying Him on the cross…Luke 23:34…  Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”  (NKJV)

This sacrificial love would also be new, because it was going to be produced through the New Covenant, by the transforming power of the Holy Spirit… The new Christian is filled with the Holy Spirit at the time they are given the gift of salvation by God; and the 9 fruit of the Spirit are in-dwelt as “Christ like” attributes, into the heart, mind, and soul of the new Christian…  This spiritual fruit will begin to grow and mature, if the new Christian grows in their knowledge and wisdom learned from reading the Bible… This fruit will also become evident and mature as the Christian is sanctified…if the Christian’s live-in Helper, the Holy Spirit (John 14:26), is left in total control of the Christian’s life…

The apostle Paul list’s these “Christ like” fruit, in…Galatians 5:22-23… But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.  (NKJV)

We see very clearly through scripture, that this love for the Lord (first and foremost)…and this love for all of those around us…is the absolute key to living righteously in God’s eyes… Jesus tells us this, after giving us the two most important commandments listed above…Matthew 22:40… “On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”  …The apostle Paul reiterates what Jesus has told us, in…Galatians 5:14… For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”  (NKJV)

One not only has to become a Christian, to possess this love great enough to be able to love even our enemy (Matthew 5:43-44); it is only possible with the supernatural help from the full power the Christian will possess, if they are filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18-20); as the Christian submits completely to the leading of the Holy Spirit with-in them…

Heavenly Father, this love You have given to all true Christians, truly is at the heart of living our lives for You… Help all of Your children seek to confess and repent of any and all sins (1 John 1:9), so that we can experience the blessings of unbelievable joy…the supernatural peace (Philippians 4:7)…and a love which will allow us to even love our enemies… I pray for this complete control by the Holy Spirit for all of Your children…in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…
