Acts 8:20-21But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money! 21 You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God.  (NKJV)

God doesn’t need our money… There is no way we can have sins forgiven by putting a little extra in the church offering plate…  I have heard it said, that some religions consider it a sin if a person does not put much money in the church offering…

The word “tithe” derived from “Old English”, means 1/10th part of something…  In the Old Testament, way back in Genesis…Jacob promised God a tenth of what he owned, in…Genesis 28:20-22… We read in…Deuteronomy 14:22-28…that the practice of tithing included a percentage of the grain harvested…the wine and oil produced…and the firstborn of their herds…

In Malachi, we read that we are robbing God, if we don’t tithe…Malachi 3:8“Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings.  (NKJV)

And yet, we read about the blessings God wants to give those who trust Him with tithing, that they will receive blessings in abundance !!   Malachi 3:10Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,” Says the Lord of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it.  (NKJV)

All the laws from the Old Testament on tithing, however…become null and void from Jesus’ time on… There is no set fixed amount that Christian’s are supposed to give to charity and their church today… The important point about giving anything in the name of the Lord, is our motive for doing so… We shouldn’t give of our time or our resources because we expect God to bless us… Christian’s should give freely from the heart, with joy… The apostle Paul makes this clear, in…

2 Corinthians 9:6-7But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.  (NKJV)

Christian’s should never be anxious or upset with giving… We should never feel as though we are being forced or coerced to give; and our giving should be done as we are able… Many Christian’s still use 10% of their gross pay, as a guide for their financial giving… But God is more concerned about our motive, and our ability to give, than He is with a fixed amount…

If we are able to give more, God promises we will have all that we need in abundance…but God wants us to use our abundance for more good works…not for our own selfish desires…Corinthians 9:8And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.  (NKJV)

So if your going to give of your time, or in some other financial way to your church or some other charitable organization…make sure you are freely giving from the heart with joy, expecting nothing in return… God will see your motives for giving, and will either bless you for it; or He will see your ulterior motives, and consider your giving as just another way you are deceiving Him, and quite possibly yourself…

Heavenly Father, I pray Your Word clears up any doubt as to what the Bible reveals about how we are to give of ourselves and our resources to our church and those in need…  I pray Lord, that each and every one of Your children can clearly see what matters to You, and what is done in vain… I pray Lord, that people will give in a way that will be pleasing to You…and that they may be blessed as You see fit… I pray for all of Your children to be good stewards of their time and their finances…in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…
