Gods group thoughts for 12/21/2012 “Walking Worthy”

“Our Daily Bread”

The Daily Devotions of Greg Laurie

Ephesians 5:1-2Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.  (NKJV)

I often mention the word “sanctification”, which is the lifelong process of a Christian growing and maturing in the likeness of Jesus Christ…  If we as Christians are not growing closer to the Lord as we grow older…then we are either stagnant; or worse…we are heading away from the Lord…  The opening scripture has the Apostle Paul writing to the believers in the church of Ephesus…urging them to walk in love

Jesus centered His teaching around love; and gave us His two most important commandments…Love the Lord with ALL of our heart, ALL of our soul, and ALL of our mind… And then Jesus tells us that we are to love those around us as we love ourselves…Matthew 22:36-40…  When the Christian focuses on pleasing their Father in heaven, and allows the love of Christ to reign supreme in their lives, with ALL of their being…they will be walking in love…  The Christian will also be walking in the Spirit…

The Apostle Paul also reminds us, that if we are Christians, we were filled with the Holy Spirit when God graced us with salvation…Romans 8:9But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.  (NKJV)

To remain walking in the Spirit (filled with the love of Christ), is a lifelong battle between listening to the urging of the Holy Spirit, as He always makes the right decisions for you to follow…or allowing your flesh or Satan, to tempt you into sinning…

If my own life is normal for everyone, in describing this process of sanctification, I must tell you that you may be in for a bumpy ride…  It took me just over 7 years to go from being Spirit filled on the day God graced me with salvation…to a point in my life where all of my joy and the peace that I once had in the Lord were gone…to again reaching a point in my life where I was again walking with the Lord as a Spirit filled Christian…

Though the battle between our flesh and Satan, versus the Holy Spirit, will never be completely won until we are with the Lord in glory, at our death…I attribute my success (for the most part) in overcoming the temptations to sin, to systematically putting on the whole armor of God, which the Apostle Paul writes about, in…Ephesians 6:10-20… Here is the link for this important scripture noting God’s protective armor to shield the Christian from Satan’s fiery darts (Ephesians 6:16)…   http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=eph6:10-20&version=NKJV

The Apostle Paul has much to say about walking in the Spirit…Galatians 5:16-17 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.  (NKJV)

It is only by walking in the Spirit…allowing the Holy Spirit to fight your minute by minute battles, that will help you to not fulfill the lust of the flesh… It will be a lifelong battle to fend off Satan and our own flesh… But it is a battle that can be progressively easier to win most of the time…as we continue to grow in our spiritual maturity… As we grow closer to the Lord, He will grow closer to us…James 4:7-8

The ability to “Walking Worthy” is achieved, by putting on the Lord Jesus Christ every morning…The Apostle Paul uses these words; they aren’t mine…Romans 13:14But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.  (NKJV)

I equate putting on the Lord Jesus Christ, with putting on God’s protective spiritual armor every morning…  There are 6 pieces to the full set of spiritual armor the Apostle Paul writes about; and understanding what it’s all about starts with the only offensive piece of this 6 piece set of spiritual armor God gives us to put on… It is the “sword of the Spirit”, which is the Word of God (Ephesians 6:17b)…

If you’re a Christian in need of finding some absolute joy for a change…and a God given peace that goes beyond our mortal understanding (Philippians 4:6-7)…pick up your Bible…  Ask the Lord for spiritual wisdom to understand what you are about to read (James 1:5), and let God’s Word (and God Himself), fill you with all that you will ever need to be able to walk worthy of the calling God has graced you with…

Heavenly Father, I am ever so thankful for the truth that every Christian who diligently searches Your Word, will hopefully be able to find for themselves…  I pray Father, that You would urge each and every one of Your children to explore Your Word, and to systematically put on their own complete set of the spiritual armor that You offer for all of us to put on… I pray Father, that this Christmas season, culminating with the day we celebrate as the birth of Your Son…will find all of Your children walking worthy in Your will and Your ways…  I pray for this fullness of the Holy Spirit for all of us, in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…
