Joshua 9:3-4…  But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, they worked craftily, and went and pretended to be ambassadors. And they took old sacks on their donkeys, old wineskins torn and mended, (NKJV)

Joshua had been given charge of the Israelites, to take them across the Jordan River into the promised land of Canaan…a land flowing with milk and honey (Exodus 3:8)… The Israelites had defeated the fortified city of Jericho with the help of the Lord; by His help of miraculously crashing down the cities walls…after Joshua and the Israelites marched around the city walls for 7 days, per the Lord’s instructions (Joshua chapter 6)…  And the city of Ai was also handed to Joshua and the Israelites by the Lord, in battle (Joshua chapter 8)…

The inhabitants of Gibeon, located right near Joshua, were fearful for their lives…so they pretended to have traveled from a far country, by putting on old worn clothing and patched sandals…  They were basically pleading for their lives; coming to Joshua under false pretenses, to offer themselves as servants…  God had instructed Joshua before crossing over into the land of Canaan, that all  of the inhabitants in the land of Canaan were to be eliminated (Deuteronomy 7:1-2)…

Joshua and the men of Israel were fooled into believing this false story told by the Gibeonites, about traveling from a far country, in…Joshua 9:14-15Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions; but they did not ask counsel of the Lord. 15 So Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them to let them live; and the rulers of the congregation swore to them.  (NKJV)

When Joshua found out 3 days after the covenant was already made, that the Gibeonites were really their neighbors…it was too late…  The rulers had already sworn an oath to the Lord; and it could not be broken for fear of wrath from above…Joshua 9:19-20

One important point to today’s writing is that we as Christians should always seek counsel from the Lord, before any important decisions are made for our lives…  Failure to involve the Lord in making decisions that will affect our future, could lead to disastrous results…  And when we receive directions from the Lord…we had best follow them exactly as we have been instructed…  This is the second point of today’s writing…

Moses, who had been faithful to the Lord for so many years, in leading the Israelites’ out of the bonds of slavery under Pharaoh in Egypt, and following the Lord’s instructions, as they wandered in the desert for 40 years…never got to cross over with them into the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 32:51-52)…  Moses had made one seemingly minor mistake, when he struck the rock at Meribah Kadesh twice with his rod, for water for the children of Israel…instead of following the Lord’s instructions to speak to the rock in front of the people…Numbers 20:7-13

Another example of not following the Lord’s instructions can be found in…1 Samuel 15, when King Saul did not follow the Lord’s instructions to attack Amalek; and to kill all  that they possessed…including men, women, children, and all the animals (1 Samuel 15:3)…  King Saul’s people took the plunder of sheep and oxen, instead of destroying them as ordered…  King Saul paid the price by loosing his position as king…

1 Samuel 15:22-23…  So Samuel said: “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He also has rejected you from being king.”  (NKJV)

As Christians, we may not lose as much as Moses and King Saul did, for failure to follow the word of the Lord…  But every time we sin as a Christian, we are grieving the Holy Spirit…Ephesians 4:30…  God wants His children to come to Him in prayer for all of our important decisions…  And when we decide not to follow the urging of the Holy Spirit, and to go ahead and sin anyway…we will eventually be held accountable for our disobedient actions… God’s Word reveals that He has the right to chastise and/or scourge the ones He loves…when they are rebellious to living righteously in His sight…Hebrews 12:5-11http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=heb12:5-11&version=NKJV )

Once we as Christians get it through our thick heads that God is sovereign…that God only wants what is best for His children…and that whatever the Holy Spirit is urging us to do (no matter how much we disagree or fight God’s direction for our lives)…that all things God puts us through, work for our best interest…

Romans 8:28And we know that allthings work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.  (NKJV)

You’ve hear it said that you can’t fight City Hall ??  I am here to tell ya that you will never win an argument with God… Once you finally realize that God’s way is the only way to be pleasing in His sight…  And that God only rewards His obedient children with His richest blessings, like I wrote about yesterday…you just won’t want to “upset the apple cart” so to speak…

I will reiterate what I wrote just yesterday… Once a Christian gets to a level of spiritual maturity, where living for Christ is the primary goal of their lives…they will not want to live any other way…  The fullness of God (Ephesians 3:19) has to be experienced to be believed…

Heavenly Father, I pray that all of Your children would put away stubbornness…rebellion…and rejection of Your Word, that You have given to us for instruction on how to live our lives…  I pray Lord, for humility…for reverence to You…and for total submission of our lives to Your will And Your ways…  I pray for this fullness of Christ for all of us, in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…
