John13:14-15If I then, yourLord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash oneanother’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as Ihavedone to you.  (NKJV)

Jesus spoke these words to His disciples, at what is now called “The Last Supper”…  Jesus had already washed the feet of His disciples, when the opening scripture is recorded…  This was an unheard of thing in Jesus’ time; because washing the feet of guests at a meal, was done by servants (typically women)…  But Jesus, with His last chance to teach His disciples before His impending death on the cross the next day…felt it important to teach His disciples (and us) humility, as Jesus taught by example…

Jesus then told His disciples, that He was going away to a place where they could not follow Him…John 13:33… This, of course, upset His disciples…who had spent over 3 years (24/7), with their Master and their Lord…  We have God’s completed Word, the Bible…so we can read these words with 20/20 hindsight vision…  But put yourself at the table of this last meal that Jesus’ disciples ate with their Lord…

Jesus then tried to comfort His disciples, with words that all of God’s children should now read with excitement, and anticipation…

John 14:1-3Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so,I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, thereyou may be also.”  (NKJV)

Tomorrow, Christians all over the world celebrate Good Friday…  This religious holiday, is observed to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, with His death on the cross at Calvary…  Christians today, can call it “Good Friday”, because we know about Jesus’ resurrection from the grave…  But you can be sure that Jesus’ disciples would not have called the day Jesus died on the cross, a good day…  For them, when Jesus died on the cross, their hopes and their dreams died right along with Jesus…

Many Christians will be going to church services on these special days leading up to, and including Easter Sunday…  The Bible is clear on who should partake of Communion; also know by some as the Lord’s Supper…

This is a precious time in the life of a believer…  But this celebration in remembering the sacrifice that Jesus made for His redeemed children, should not be taken lightly…

The apostle Paul gave all Bible believing Christians, explicit instructions on the institution of the Lord’s Supper, in…1 Corinthians 11:23-30…  Here is the link, for those who want to read first hand, what God reveals in His inerrant Word…    http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1cor11:23-33&version=NKJV

Christians are to examine themselves…bringing to mind any sins that have not been confessed before God…  These sins must be confessed (1 John 1:9), before this bread and this cup signifying Jesus’ body and blood, are taken… The apostle Paul pens this, in…

1 Corinthians 11:27-30 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthymanner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.  (NKJV)

When a Christian partakes of Holy Communion, with un-confessed sins…they not only dishonor the ceremony…they dishonor Christ’s body and blood, as they mock His sacrifice for their sins…  Friends, this is a serious business for those who take Holy Communion with un-confessed sins(in an unworthy manner)…  The Bible records that God took the lives of the worst offenders…  My study notes refer to…Acts 5:1-11…&…1 John 5:16…for scripture indicating sin leading to death…

Heavenly Father, I pray that all Christians will use these days leading up to Easter Sunday…as a time to reflect on the grace that You have bestowed upon all of Your children…  Help Your children to live in a manner, that is worthy of Jesus’ shed blood on the cross…  Help us Lord, to present our bodies a holy living sacrifice, which is acceptable to You…Romans 12:1-2…  I pray for this fullness of Christ for all of us, in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…

  1. Sam Carver says:

“in an unworthy manner” is not only a reference to not recognizing our sinfulness, but also, an even more so, not recognizing & understanding what the work is that Christ did alone in securing our salvation through his sacrifice.
