“When the Circus Comes to Town”
“He is especially hard on those who follow their own evil, lustful desires and who despise authority. These people are proud and arrogant, daring even to scoff at the glorious ones without so much as trembling.”2 Peter 2:10 NLT
Back in the days before TV, video games and cartoons…the circus coming to town was the big event in a community.
Crowds would line the streets for the traditional circus parade, and follow the parade to the big top for daring deeds and dazzling costumes.
Am old friend once told about his grocery store owning dad during the depression, getting upset when he went to the circus to find people who could not find the money to pay him, finding money to go to the circus.
Today we see this phenomenon at work in about every area of our spiritual lives. We conjure up all sorts of reasons and excuses for forsaking the assembling ourselves for worship and have no problem at all in finding time to attend or watch sporting events or other things that attract or entertain us.
Our first fruit giving gets turned into leftover giving of time, talents, and resources when the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil come to where we live.
The deceiver of our souls is a master showman, who made P.T. Barnum a piker when it comes to getting us to come to the circus of temptation. He produces so much glitter and promises so much pleasure few can resist.
Only the full armor of God and the focus of keeping God first in our lives can keep us from succumbing when the circus of temptation comes to where we live.
Father, May I never put any desire or temptation above my desire to seek you and your righteousness. In Jesus strong name, Amen
