Psalm 119:9-10How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. 10 With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me notwander from Your commandments!  (NKJV)

I am reading a book by Francis Chan, titled… “Multiply”…  The Lord has given all Christians the command to share the gospel of Christ to plant seeds, to allow God to “make disciples of all the nations”…Matthew 28:19-20…  Every Christian that is rooted and grounded in the love of Christ (Ephesians 3:17-19), should not only pray for, and respond to opportunities to share the gospel of Christ; they should consider discipling younger Christians…

This book by Francis Chan is all about disciples of Christ, helping to make new disciples of Christ; who in turn would make new disciples who would continue the process of multiplying the worlds population of Christians…until the gospel has spread to all people…

I am only a third done the book; but I have already come across one important concept that the author proposes, that really makes sense to me…  Mr Chan suggests that Christians shouldn’t read the Bible in order to grow in their spiritual knowledge and wisdom of the Lord…  Christians should read the Bible, in order to allow God to change their hearts and lives…  When you stop and consider this thought; it truly makes a lot of sense…

The opening scripture continues on with…Psalm 119:11…  Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might notsin against You.  (NKJV)

Other scripture, referring to God’s Word being implanted into the human heart, can be read in…Psalm 37:30-31Psalm 40:8Proverbs 7:1-3…&…Deuteronomy 11:18-19“Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 19 You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you liedown, and when you riseup.”  (NKJV)

So how do these words of God become implanted into the Christian’s heart ??  The writer of Hebrews tells us, in…Hebrews 8:10For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put Mylaws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.  (NKJV)

It’s God who writes His Word in our hearts and minds…  But we have to read God’s Word to allow God to change us…  Jesus tells us that we must feed on God’s Word, when He taught this, in…Matthew 4:4But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by breadalone, but by everyword that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”  (NKJV)

Everywordthat God has given to us, means the whole  Bible…  God’s Word is alive and powerfulHebrews 4:12-13 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is nocreaturehidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must giveaccount.  (NKJV)

Someone shouldn’t become a Christian, and then figure they are “good to go”, so to speak…  Becoming a Christian is just the beginning of the rest of one’s life as a child of God; and the Christian should be steadily being conformed into the image of Christ…Romans 8:29…  For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to beconformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.  (NKJV)

Going to a Bible believing, preaching and teaching church is a good start to the lifelong process called sanctification, that all Christians have been called to partake of…  The Christian has been sanctified (set apart) from the world by God…  This is a one time positional separation unto Christ, at the time of salvation…  But there should also be a practical progressive holiness in the believer’s life…where they strive to be completely separated from the presence of evil…  Satan and the Christian’s carnal flesh can only be defeated by the power of the Holy Spirit, when the Christian is walking in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16), under complete control by the leading of the Holy Spirit…

I don’t believe the Christian can be Spirit filled (Ephesians 5:18-20), unless they spend time (hopefully daily) in the Word of God… I have always believed that the Christian had to put on piece by piece, the 6 piece set of spiritual armor the Apostle Paul writes about in…Ephesians 6:10-20…  Here is the link to this scripture, listing the 6 piece set of God’s spiritual armor…   http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=eph6:10-20&version=NKJV

The Word of God (the sword of the Spirit…Ephesians 6:17b), is the only offensive piece of the “Whole armor of God”…that if worn in its entirety, will protect the Christian from Satan’s fiery darts…Ephesians 6:11…  But I’m now leaning the way Francis Chan believes…that is God who will put on this spiritual protective armor piece by piece…as the Christian feeds on God’s Word, the Bible…1 Peter 2:2-3

I urge every Christian to find themselves a study Bible (see note at the end)…and to diligently read God’s Word, to allow God to transform their lives…  The Apostle Paul gives us this important scripture about God’s inerrant Word, in…2 Timothy 3:16-17All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.  (NKJV)

Heavenly Father, I pray that Your Word would touch the hearts of those in need, to see the rewards that await those who diligently seek You through Your Word…Hebrews 11:6…  I pray for Your blessings of hope, love, joy, and peace that only You can provide, for each and every one of today’s readers…  As always, I pray for these things in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…

Blessings in Christ,   bruce r mills

Yes! Too often we are instructed to share the Gospel but discipleship is often neglected even though it is part of the Great Commission. My mom and I were talking just this morning about one element of discipleship that is done in her church in NC. People are encouraged to memorize a given list of Scripture verses, and once they do that, to encourage and help someone else to do the same. While discipleship can seem somewhat scary and daunting, I can see how simply getting together with another person and helping them memorize Scripture can be a bit less intimidating and yet lead to true discipleship. Thank you, Bruce, for the reminder and exhortation!
