Psalm 127:1Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain.  (NKJV)
With 20/20 hindsight, for me this opening scripture written by the wise Solomon, is really a simple message…  And yet, before someone is filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18-20) on a more or less continuous basis…they will be wasting their time, their talents, and their resources in vain…
For me personally…I spent 52 years living in the world, as a relatively successful person…  I believed I was a Christian…  I thought I knew God…(But He didn’t know me…Matthew 7:21-23)  I managed to graduate from college…  I married the love of my life, that will now be 42 years ago, in a couple of months…  I found a good engineering job in my field, that eventually topped a 6 figure income…  I had 3 great kids that are all college graduates…  We went on several rather expensive vacations for a middle income family…   And yet, was I successful in God’s eyes ??
Absolutely not !!   I was an unredeemed sinner, who was blinded to the truth (2 Corinthians 4:4) that God wants all of us to understand…1 Timothy 2:2b-4…  that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.  (NKJV)
All the worldly wisdom, and all the money in the world cannot provide the knowledge of thetruth, that the apostle Paul pens in this scripture to his protege’ Timothy…
The opening scripture was penned by Solomon, who God not only made the wisest man there ever was…God also made Solomon the wealthiest man there ever was…1 Kings 3:10-13… (Here is an interesting link about King Solomon, and his life…  http://christianity.about.com/od/oldtestamentpeople/a/Jz-King-Solomon.htm )
But with all of Solomon’s wealth, power, and wisdom…came his final realization, that it was all in vain…Ecclesiastes 6:1-12…  Solomon wrote the Book of Ecclesiastes, which expresses Solomon’s tragic, painful mistake of wasting much of his life squandering God’s blessings on his personal pleasure, rather than on the glory of God…
I pray Solomon’s wise remarks revealed in the opening scripture would resonate with any of us who don’t place the Lord at the very top of our existence…  We must first become a Christian in God’s eyes…not just in our own minds, like I did for so many years… (See the note at the end for more on God’s grace through saving faith alone in Jesus Christ)
But once we become Christians in God’s eyes…living in God’s will, as we seek to be conformed into the image of Christ (Romans 8:29), should remain the focal point of our lives…  It took me several years after my salvation, to finally realize this simple truth…  Our way is not God’s way… I urge everyone to read this scripture penned by Isaiah…where God gives us an invitation to abundant life, in…Isaiah 55:1-9…  http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=isa55:1-9&version=NKJv
God wants all of His redeemed children to keep Him at the forefront of our minds, with one main purpose…to glorify Him in all that we say and do…  God created us in His image (Genesis 1:27), for His good pleasure…Ephesians 1:4-5…&…Colossians 1:16  Here is an interesting link titled… “Why did God create us ?”…  http://www.gotquestions.org/why-did-God-create-us.html
Once we as Christians can truly understand that God is sovereign…that God never makes mistakes…and that God always allows things in the lives of His children to work for their good, according to His purpose...Romans 8:28…it should become crystal clear that God wants us to get out of our own way…and place our lives into the Lord’s ready, willing, and capable hands…
What could be better than to close with one of my favorite scripture verses, also penned by the wise Solomon, in..Proverbs 3:5-6…  Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your ownunderstanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths(NKJV)
Heavenly Father, if we could only understand and see things the way Your Son Jesus Christ did, as He dwelt among us…  Your servant, the apostle Paul, tells us that we as Christians have the mind of Christ…1 Corinthians 2:16…  Help us Lord, to develop and mature this mind that You have given to all of Your children…as we do our very best to live in Your will and Your ways…  I pray for this fullness of Christ in all of our lives…and the God given supernatural peace that walking in sweet fellowship with You will bring…in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…
Blessings in Christ,  bruce r mills
