1 Peter 5:10-11…  But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. 11 ToHimbe the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.  (NKJV)

The opening scripture written by the Apostle Peter is believed to have been written 2 or 3 years before his crucifixionwhich tradition says was upside down, in A.D. 67-68…  This would have been some 30+ years after Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross…estimated to be sometime between A.D. 30-36…

1 Peter 5:5-11, was written to the elders of the church…indicating in verse 5, submissiveness…verse 5-6, humility…verse 7, trust…verse 8, sober mindedness…and in verse 8-9, vigilance against the devil…  Here is a link to this scripture…  http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1pet5:5-11&version=NKJV;KJV   Possessing these Christ like attributes would indicate they were mature Christians who were well on their way to being conformed into the image of Christ…Romans 8:29

Verse 5 of this scripture, is where I focus my attention for today’s writing…1Peter 5:5Likewise you younger people, submityourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you besubmissive to oneanother, and beclothed with humility, for “Godresists the proud, Butgivesgrace to the humble.”  (NKJV)

One doesn’t have to be grey-haired to be spiritually mature enough as a Christian, to understand and to live their lives doing their best to give God the glory and the dominion forever and ever

Once the Christian truly understand the message of the cross…they should be living their lives as truly visible beacons of light that Jesus speaks of, in… Matthew 5:16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your goodworks and glorify your Father in heaven.  (NKJV)

How many of us older, more mature Christians have found ourselves pouring our hearts out to the younger generation…or even older people who either don’t know the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Savior…or if they are a Christian, they are not living for Christ ??   We try to share our own testimony and/or the “good news” of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ to those in need of hearing the truth from God’s inerrant Word, the Bible…

We do this out of our love and concern for those around us that we really care about…  It could be family…it could be neighbors…it could be people at work, that God has called all of His redeemed children to witness to, to share the love of Christ…to encourage…or to just be there for them when the opportunity presents itself…

I write today, to expound on writing I posted last Saturday, done by Rob Barkman…a brother in Christ, and a pastor for 20 years…  Here is the link to this writing; I would urge all of you to spend a few minutes reading it…especially part 5 and 6…   http://settledinheaven.wordpress.com/2013/10/24/sihs-think-on-these-things-proverbs-273-6/

Rob Barkman uses scripture from Proverbs, written by the wise Solomon…to advise those being witnessed to, to consider listening to someone who obviously portrays the love and the light of Christ…considering them as a friend and a blessing from God…  You might even forward today’s writing, including this link by Rob Barkman, to someone you have been trying to witness to, that has snubbed their nose at your godly attempts to share the love of Christ with them…

And for those of you who find yourselves shying away from godly advice from an older family member, neighbor, or friend…please consider that they just might know a little more about how to please God, because of the life changing experiences they have already gone through…  I share my heart not because I am any better than anyone around me…  I try to share my failures and previous blindness with others because of my love and concern for them…and because I hope that they can avoid making the same mistakes I have already spent years learning how to finally avoid…

As a Christian who does their best to walk in the Spirit…I love to speak with other Christians about God’s love, the Bible, and how God has graced me with unmerited and unearned salvation…  Praise the Lord for His longsuffering and patience in saving an old wretch like me !!  I have yet to find another Christian who is truly living for Christ; tell me they don’t want to talk about the Lord… Sharing thoughts about the Lord should be embraced with because of mutual love for our Savior…

Friends, it is not about me… It is about the absolute power and majesty of the Lord…and how the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit can help me overcome any trial or pitfall in life, with a peace and a joy that only God can give His children who are obedient to the direction the Holy Spirit living with-in them…

I often speak of love, joy, and peace, which are the first big 3 of the 9 fruit of the Spirit that God has given to all of His redeemed children…Galatians 5:22-23…   These attributes of Christ are being manifested in the Christian by the fullness of Christ…as the supernatural love of Christwhich passes our mortal knowledge… Ephesians 3:16-20…as the fullness of joy when the Christian is walking in the SpiritJohn 15:11Colossians 1:11…&…Jude 1:24…and as a supernatural peace, that goes beyond our mortal understanding…Philippians 4:6-7

Here is the first paragraph of Rob Barkman’s  SUMMARY: on Earthly Blessings From The Lord: Friendship

One of the greatest, and perhaps overlooked, earthly blessings from the Lord is the blessings of friendship.  When we possess a true friend we can know that they can be counted on to always do what is for our benefit whether help in times of need or correction to get us back on track.”

True friends are hard to find…  But when you have someone who seems to really care about you…and they want to speak to you about the love of Christ and what He has done for them…take down the wall of pride or stubbornness…and look at them as a possible blessing from the Lord, who God has asked to help you in any way they can…  Be open to the possibility that they may see something in you that they have corrected in their own life, by the indwelling fullness and the teaching power of the Holy Spirit…

The wise Solomon gives us a piece of scripture we should all be humble enough to understand and be open to, in…Proverbs 27:17…  Asironsharpensiron, So a mansharpens the countenance of his friend.  (NKJV)

Heavenly Father, I pray that Your Word would urge us through the power and the conviction of the Holy Spirit, to understand that there are those around us that are truly interested in helping us live in a way that would be pleasing to You…  I pray Lord, that You would cut right to the very core like a two-edged sword, of the soul of those in need of hearing the truth You have laid upon the hearts of Your children to share…Hebrews 4:12-13I pray for this fullness of Christ in all of our lives, in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…

Blessings in Christ,  bruce r mills

  1. Rob Barkman says:

Very well said brother. How often our attempts to lend spiritual help to our friends is dismissed as “interference” and “attempts to manipulate” others.

“True friends are hard to find… But when you have someone who seems to really care about you…and they want to speak to you about the love of Christ and what He has done for them…take down the wall of pride or stubbornness…and look at them as a possible blessing from the Lord, who God has asked to help you in any way they can… Be open to the possibility that they may see something in you that they have corrected in their own life, by the indwelling fullness and the teaching power of the Holy Spirit…”

Really hits the nail on the head. Your teaching is much needed and appreciated. Lord continue to bless you and the ministry here.

Also thank you for the kind references to the SIH posting. His Word is so rich with wisdom for us all to benefit and receive with joy.
