Luke 9:61-62…  And another also said, “Lord,I will followYou, butlet me firstgo and bidthemfarewell who areat my house.” 62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, having puthishand to the plow, and lookingback, is fit for the kingdom of God.”  (NKJV)

There are no “if, and, or buts”,when it comes to being a faithful follower of Jesus Christ…  I just wrote the other day on what Jesus told us was required to make a true disciple that was following Him... (11/18/2013)   All true disciples of Christ are believers…  But not all believers are disciples of Christ…

I posted a link for an excellent audio description of “What is a Disciple ?”, done by Francis Chan…found at www.multiplymovement.com under “Material” (Listen to Session), that includes 7 questions we can ask ourselves to see how we stack up to what makes a true disciple of Christ…   https://s3.amazonaws.com/multiply/audiobook/p1-s1.mp3

When the unbeliever places their saving faith and trust in Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior…they have placed their hand to the plow, as Jesus describes in the opening scripture…  The Lord wants His children to follow Him as His disciple, for the rest of their lives…  And as a disciple of Jesus Christ, we have been commanded by Jesus to make disciples of all of those around us who are not Christians…when Jesus spoke these last words of instruction, before ascending into heaven to sit at the right hand of God the Father, in…

Matthew 28:19-20Go therefore and makedisciplesofall the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teachingthem to observe allthings that I have commandedyou; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.  (NKJV)

But unless we are consistent followers (disciples) of Jesus Christ, I don’t believe we will be adequately prepared to go out and make other disciples, like Jesus has commanded all Christians to do…

I just listened to Dr. Charles Stanley’s Part 2 of “Understanding Your Call”which was dated Nov. 16, 2013…and can be found at http://www.intouch.org/broadcast/audio-archives   Dr. Stanley uses scripture from…Luke 9:57-62…(which has Jesus explaining the cost of discipleship), to teach us what the difference is between a believer and a follower of Jesus Christ…  Dr. Stanley points out that 2 of the people Jesus was speaking to, used the word “but”, after Jesus told them to come follow Him…

I have titled today’s writing “Plowing a Strait Line”, because as Jesus states in the opening scripture, once we become a Christian, we should not look back at anything from our past that will cause us to waver from the path the Lord wants us to follow…  If the farmer takes his eye off of his mule to look back, when plowing his field…he can in no way maintain a straight furrow that the farmer is trying to plow…

Christians are filled with the Holy Spirit at the moment God graces them with salvation…  God gives His children the Holy Spirit as a lifelong Helper, to guide them down a straight and narrow godly path in life…  Every time we disobey God, by not following the urging of the Holy Spirit…we are saying that our own self-interests are more important than God’s direction for our lives…  These distractions will cause confusion and a separation from the guiding hand of the Holy Spirit, causing possible unneeded pain and suffering…  Wayward Christians will also be susceptible to possible chastising and scourging by God, as penned by the writer of Hebrews, in…Hebrews 12:5-9…  Here is the link… http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=heb12%3A5-11&version=NKJV;KJV

If the focus of the Christian could always remain on following the teaching of Christ, through obediently following the leading of the Holy Spirit…we would never sin…  Of course this is impossible…  All Christians will sin…  But true disciples of Jesus Christ will have matured to a point in their lives, where their number of sins should be diminishing…as they become more and more conformed into the image of Christ…Romans 8:29

Some Christians never get past the sins that God has already forgiven them, from before they were saved…  When they look back at old habits…at old thought patterns…at old pre-salvation temptations from Satan, or their own flesh that kept them living in the bondage of sin and shame…they sometimes fall back into their old sinful ways, and get pulled off of the path that God would have preferred them to take…

I would urge every reader to spend some time listening to Francis Chan’s audio on what a disciple of Christ should look like, answering the 7 questions he poses…and Dr. Stanley’s audio giving guidance and direction on how to best follow the Lord Jesus’ call on the Christian’s life…

Dr. Stanley gives excellent advice to Christians that are not now followers of Jesus Christ…and poses the very serious question that I will paraphrase…“Are you willing to forsake the awesome blessings the Lord wants to give His obedient disciples…because of some self-interest obsession from your pre-salvation days ??”

God wants to bless His children with more than they could ever expect to accomplish in their own power or capabilities…  And those true disciples of Jesus Christ have God’s promise through the full power of the Holy Spirit, that they will be“able to do exceedinglyabundantly above all that we ask or think, in…

Ephesians 3:20…   Now to Him who is able to do exceedinglyabundantly above all that we ask or think, according to thepower that works in us, (NKJV)

Heavenly Father, I pray that Your Word, and the teaching of both Francis Chan and Dr. Charles Stanley, could be used to open the eyes of those in need of becoming true disciples of Your Son Jesus Christ…  Help all of us Lord, through the power and the conviction of the Holy Spirit…to do a self-analysis of our own lives with the goal of becoming true disciples of Jesus Christ…  I pray for this fullness of Christ in all of our lives, in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…

Blessings in Christ,  bruce r mills
