2 Timothy 3:16-17All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.  (NKJV)

The opening scripture, penned by the Apostle Paul, is perhaps the best overall description found in the Bible, as to why Christians should spend time, hopefully each and every day, to be fed spiritually…as Jesus suggests when He tells us this, in…Matthew 4:4…  But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by breadalone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”  (NKJV)

I often write about this importance of spending time in God’s Word…  But in my quiet time audio listening this morning, I heard francis chan’s take on “Why Study the Bible ?”, that gave me food for thought, so to speak…

Today I write for one person in particular, who really needs the Lord’s guidance in their life…and for any of you who want to hear francis chan’s audio chapter on “Why Study the Bible ?”, from his book “Multiply”…that was written to help make disciples for Christ…  Here is the link for this audio lesson…  https://s3.amazonaws.com/multiply/audiobook/p3-s1.mp3

Francis Chan’s book “Multiply” (disciples making disciples), can be either read or listened to, by going to www.multiplymovement.com under “Material”…clicking on the chapter (1 to 24), and then “Read More”…“Download PDF” or “Listen to Session”… Today’s writing is based on chapter 07…

I found this chapter to be most enlightening…especially the first part which francis titles…“Studying the Right Book for the Wrong Reasons”… He lists 3 very wrong reasons for reading the Bible, of which I have personally been guilty of, in all 3 cases…  First…are you reading the Bible because you have been told that you should ??  I constantly tell you that you should be reading the Bible, hopefully every day…  But if you are reading the Bible because you find yourself feeling guilty, if you don’t…then you are reading the Bible for the wrong reason…

Second…francis suggests that if you are reading the Bible to gain knowledge, so that you can feel good when you appear to know more than the other’s around you in Sunday School, or when you are trying to witness to someone…this too is for the wrong reason…  Francis points us to scripture written by the Apostle Paul, which sums up this mistake, in just part of a short verse, in…1 Corinthians 8:1b…  Knowledgepuffsup, but loveedifies.  (NKJV)

And third…if you are only reading the Bible so that you can teach that Bible study or a Sunday school class…but are not spending time for your own edification…you are reading the Bible for the wrong reason…  I have found myself cutting back on my personal Q/T reading of the Bible, because I had spend so much time searching the scriptures and the internet, in preparation for that day’s writing…

Francis chan goes on in this chapter to explain why we should be reading the Bible…  The Apostle Paul gives us the answer in the opening scripture…  God didn’t give us the Bible for us to just gain wisdom and knowledge about Himself…although the Bible is filled with exactly who God is…  God gave us the Bible so that He could teach us about ourselves…how evil the world that we live in really is…and how we can overcome our life of being chained to Satan and the world’s evil ways by looking to Jesus Christ…

The Old Testament teaches us that man will never be able to obey the 10 Commandments that God hand carved with His finger, and gave to Moses atop Mount Sinai to bring down to the Israelites…Exodus 31:18…   The New Testament ushers in the beginning of New Covenant when God sent down His Son, Jesus…by whom sinners could now be saved by the shed blood of Jesus Christ…as each new child of God is graced with the gift of salvation through saving faith alone in the Lord Jesus Christ…Ephesians 2:8-9…  (See more at the end on God’s gift of grace)

God gives us the Bible so that Christians will be prepared to answer virtually any question about any of life’s circumstances, with godly wisdom…  Christians are given the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16), when they receive the Holy Spirit as a life long live-in Helper…John 14:26…  Christians won’t have answers to life’s most difficult questions, using their own mortal minds…

This is exactly why some people don’t agree with what God teaches us in the Bible…  Anytime we read something in the Bible…and we disagree with what God has preserved for us in His inerrant Word…we are saying we know more than God…   Since God’s Word is nothing but pure truth…when we disagree with His Word, we will be wrong every time…

But when we humbly submit our lives and our minds to the Lord, and we read His Word with the idea of learning how to be conformed over time, into the image of Christ (Romans 8:29)…we, through the living and powerful Word of God (Hebrews 4:12-13) can be transformed in every aspect of our lives into a true follower (disciple) of Jesus Christ…Romans 12:1-2

The right motivation for reading the Bible, will make all the difference in the life of the believer…  Spending time in God’s Word should be our hearts desire, and not a burden…  This desire should be natural in the life of a believer, just like babies naturally desire milk to grow…  These aren’t my words…they were penned by the Apostle Peter, in…1 Peter 2:1-3Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newbornbabes, desirethepuremilk of the word, that you may grow thereby, ifindeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.  (NKJV)

There is so much more I believe you can learn from the teaching of francis chan…  Please consider checking out his book “Multiply”, to learn how to allow God’s Word to dwell in you, richly…Colossians 3:16…  I know the Bible has given me some godly insight into questions like…Why are we here ??  What is life really about ??  How can I make the best of my life ??  How can I please God ??  And any number of life’s most challenging questions…

Spend the time in God’s Word, with the right motivation…and see for yourself how living and powerful God’s Word really is…  If you’re a Christian, put on the Lord Jesus Christ each and every day…Romans 13:14…and allow God’s protection to keep the you safe and sound in the palm of His hand, as you go out into the world to share Christ’s love with those in need of hearing the truth from God’s Word…John 8:32…

Heavenly Father, I pray that Your Word and the godly teaching of Your servant francis chan, will be used by You to cut to the very core of the soul of those that need to be spiritually nourished by Your Word… I pray Lord, that through the power and the conviction of the Holy Spirit…that hearts and lives may be changed for an eternity…  I pray for this fullness of Christ in all of our lives, in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…
