Mark 7:6-7He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiahprophesy of youhypocrites, as it is written: ‘This peoplehonorsMe with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. Andinvain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ” (NKJV)
The opening scripture has Jesus calling the scribes and the Pharisees hypocrites, because they used traditions handed down by their past ancestors to over-ride the Word of God…  We see these words spoken by Jesus, as recorded in…Mark 7:13making the word of Godofnoeffectthrough your tradition which you have handeddown. And many such things you do.”  (NKJV)
Jesus teaches us (when He was witnessing to the Samaritan woman at the well), what true worship is, in…John 4:23-24…  “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the trueworshipers will worship the Fatherinspiritandtruth; for the Father is seekingsuch to worshipHim. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worshipHimmustworship in spiritandtruth.”  (NKJV)
How do we go about worshiping God in spiritandtruth ??   First we must be worshiping God with allof our heart, mind, and soul…  This was the first of Jesus’ two most important commandments, recorded in…Matthew 22:36-40…  Church is not a place to go to clear our conscience while living in sin, or to make us feel good after we have done our duty for the week…  It’s not about us at all…  Worshipping God is about glorifying Him with the honor and the praise and the glory that God so richly deserves…and in a manner that will please Him…
We see in the opening scripture, where the heart of these Pharisees and scribes was far from their worship…  They were worshiping God with their lips, as they used vain repetition of scriptures without coming before the Lord with a humble and contrite heart…  To worship the Lord in spirit, we as Christians must have a contrite heart seeking repentance…with hatred and regret for our sins…  Such is the heart of the Christian who desires to please God over their sinful desires of the flesh…and who has saving faith in Jesus Christ and His atonement for their sins at the cross, as all sufficient for salvation…
Here is an excellent link describing a broken spirit and a contrite heart, based upon Psalm 51 penned by King David, who was seeking forgiveness from the Lord after his horrendous sins of adultery with Bathsheba, and the murder of her husband Uriah (2 Samuel 11)…   http://www.gotquestions.org/broken-spirit-contrite-heart.html
We also see that the worship of the scribes and the Pharisees in the opening scripture was based upon Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men…  This, my friends, is where truthenters into the picture of what Jesus describes as trueworshipersof His Father…  Any church worship that is not totally based upon the truth found only in God’s inerrant Word, the Bible, is vain worship…much like the Pharisees who based their worship on tradition which you have handeddown, and on doctrine written by man, and not found in the Bible…
To worship the Lord in spiritandtruth, every part of a church’s doctrine must be based solely on what God has revealed to us through His Word, the Bible…  God Himself warns us on the last page of the Bible (at the end of the Book of Revelation)…that we are not to add to or take away from the truth found in His Word…lest we suffer the plagues written about in His Book…and have our names removed from the “Book of Life”, with no chance of eternal life in heaven…   A pretty sever warning, wouldn’t you say ??
Here is a link to this warning by God, and other warnings found in the Bible about adding to or taking away from God’s perfect, inerrant Word…  http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Revelation22%3A18-19%2C%20deut4%3A2%2C%2012%3A32%2C%20prov30%3A6%2C%20jer26%3A2&version=NKJV;KJV
Churches mustbase their entire doctrine exclusively upon God’s revealed Word, the Bible, or invain they worship Me like Jesus speaks of in the opening scripture…  Here is the link for a 24 lesson Bible study on…Are You Worshiping God in Spirit and in Truth ?” …    http://www.netbiblestudy.net/worship/
I spent a day writing about the importance of going to a church with the right church doctrine, that was titled… “Church doctrine Starts and Ends with the Word”…that can be found @ www.Godsmanforever.com by typing 1/08/2013 into the search window…
We worship the Lord through reverent prayer to Him…  When it comes to prayer, we see Jesus use the wordsvainrepetitions when He was teaching His disciples how to pray, in…Matthew 6:5 & 7And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.  And when you pray, donotusevainrepetitionsas the heathen do.For theythink that they will be heard for theirmany words.”  (NKJV)
Jesus teaches us not to say prayers that have been memorized through vainrepetitions…where we pray the same words week after week…but our minds are wandering without engaging our hearts that are truly focused upon the Lord, with humility…  These prayers not made from the heart are absolutely worthless in our worship of the Lord, since He knows what is going on in our hearts and our minds all of the time…Jeremiah 17:9-10…&…1 Samuel 16:7b
We also worship the Lord by serving Him…  All Christians are given at least 1 spiritual gift by God, which He wants His children to use in strengthening the church body they belong to…Ephesians 4:16…  These gifts aren’t for our own benefit…they are to be used to help serve others and the church, to work collectively as one unified body of Christ…  Serving others with our spiritual gift with a pure heart, is the same as serving the Lord Himself, as Jesus teaches us in…Matthew 25:40
When we go to church…and fail to get “plugged in” as I call it, by serving others with the spiritual gift God, through the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:11), has given to all of His children…we are not being good stewards of God’s gift to us, and are missing out on this vital way we can help glorify the Lord through serving Him…  I spent a day on how to… “Get Plugged in” to your church, which can be found @ www.Godsmanforever.com by typing 1/19/2013 into the search window…
There are so many ways we can worship the Lord in spiritandtruth…but I’m going to finish today with worshiping the Lord as a Spirit filled Christian…  The apostle Paul urges the believers in the church at Ephesus (and us) to be filled with the Holy Spirit, when he pens this, in…
Ephesians 5:18-20And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; butbefilledwith the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and makingmelody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for allthings to God the Father in the name of our Lord JesusChrist(NKJV)
Isn’t this a beautiful picture of worshiping the Lord in spiritandtruth??  Tobefilled with the Spirit means we are walking in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16)…by allowing the Holy Spirit to take total control of all that we say and do…  When we attend church as a Christian who has confessed, repented of, and turned from all of our sins (1 John 1:9)…our heart, mind, and soul stand righteous before the Lord…
With the Holy Spirit in control of our worship in prayer, in singing praise songs, and all the other ways we worship the Lord…our hearts should be bursting with the love of Christ…  The apostle Paul describes this as all the fullness of God, when he pens…toknow the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God, in…Ephesians 3:19
This my friends, is how we as Christians are to be trueworshipersof God the Father, as Jesus tells us…when we worshipHim” “in spiritandtruth
Heavenly Father, I pray that You urge all of us to open Your Word and read for ourselves what worshiping You in spiritandtruthreally means…  I pray Lord that all of us can experience Your richest blessings, as we walk in the Spirit with the love of Christ which passes knowledge…  I pray for this fullness of Christ, in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…
Blessings in Christ, bruce r mills
