Proverbs 15:22…  Without counsel, plans go awry,
But in the multitude of counselorstheyareestablished.  (NKJV)
I don’t know about you, but when my wife and I go away, we always try to ask the advice of someone who has already been to where we are going…or we will stop and ask a tourist information center for advice in the area we are visiting…  We have found out through bad experiences, that without planning ahead (just like the opening scripture states), our plans go awry
I got the idea for today’s writing from a video I watched done by Pastor Tim Conway, which is titled… “Have You Sought Counsel ??”  It can be viewed by going to…  http://youtu.be/2kBfCzf7n6E
I was astounded by the number of scripture verses he notes, penned by the wise Solomon from the Book of Proverbs, on this idea of seeking wise counsel from others who we believe know more than we do about almost any area of life…  We go to an auto mechanic when we have car problems…  We go to a doctor when we get sick…  Why don’t we seek wise counsel when it comes to discerning God’s revealed will for our lives ??  When I stop and think about it…who better to seek wise counsel from than the Lord Himself, for any of life’s problems…
Isaiah 9:6…  For untous a Child is born, Untous a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And Hisname will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  (NKJV)
You don’t have to read my writing for very long, before you see that I believe spending time (hopefully daily) feeding upon God’s Word (Matthew 4:4) (where becoming a Christian originates from (Romans 10:16-17)…is essential for spiritual growth in being conformed more and more into the image of Christ…Romans 8:29…   Jesus tells us this, in…John 8:31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.”  (NKJV)
If you are a Christian, a very important goal in life should be to please your Father in heaven…  But how can you please God, if you don’t know what God’s revealed will is for your life ??   Some Christians spend little or no time reading God’s inerrant and infallible Word, the Bible…  Many go to churches which teach man-made doctrine that is found no where in biblical scripture…  The Bible is the only foolproof place where a Christian can discern God’s revealed will for how best to live a life that will be pleasing in His sight…
I am reminded of an answered question about “what does renewing your mind mean ?”(Romans 12:1-2)…that I posted in my writing the other day…   This link gives us suggestions on how to best to learn the truth God wants all of us to understand …   http://www.gotquestions.org/renewing-the-mind.html
Here is a quote from this link, which I would like to share with you again today… The only way to replace the error of the world’s way of thinking is to replace it with God’s truth, and the only infallible source of God’s truth is found in his revealed word, the Bible. Transformation through renewed minds comes as believers expose themselves to God’s Word through the faithful exposition of it each week in church, personal Bible study and group Bible study. A solid church that believes in preaching the Word, reading the Word and singing the Word is invaluable in helping us renew our minds.”
I have tried to speak to many people I come in contact with, in order to share the love of Christ with them…and my own testimony of how God graced me with salvation so late in life, through saving faith alone in the Lord Jesus Christ…Ephesians 2:8-9…  I try to share what the Bible clearly reveals to us about the need to repent of our sins, as we seek Jesus Christ to become our personal Lord and Savior, through obedience of the gospel of Christ…
The Bible reveals that failure to understand and obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ will bring about everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord(taken from…2 Thessalonians 1:8-9), if unredeemed sinner dies in their sins…John 8:24…   (See note at the end for more on God’s grace through saving faith alone in Jesus Christ)
Anytime someone comes up to me and wants to speak about God or the Bible, I am all ears…  I love speaking with other Christians about God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit…  I don’t always agree with what they have to say…but I keep an open mind and listen, in hope of learning something about the Lord or His Word that I might not have known…  We as Christians should be teachable, and eager to learn all we can about the Lord, as we continue to grow in spiritual wisdom and our love for the Lord until the day we are called home to meet Christ face to face…
But when a person who professes to be a Christian, admits they don’t know much about the Bible…but they have already made up their mind that they don’t want to speak about God or His Word…I believe their pride and/or their close-minded view is detrimental to understanding the truth from God’s Word that God wants all of us to understand and obey…John 8:31-32
I am reminded of a 4:17 minute video I posted the link for the other day, in my writing titled…“Do You Welcome Criticism ??”, dated 3/12/2014…    The video was titled…“Am I a Defensive Person”, indicating that defensiveness is a gauge of pride and/or spiritual immaturity…  Here is the link for this eye opening video that should give all of us pause to consider just how defensive we might be ourselves…   http://illbehonest.com/defensive-people-are-prideful-mack-tomlinson
Some Christians might not want to speak about God or the Bible (or attend church for that matter) because they might not want to hear the truth from God’s Word…  They like their lifestyle just the way it is…  If we call ourselves Christians, the apostle John pens that we are to walk in the light as God is in the light, in…1 John 1:5-7…  Any Christian who continues living the way the world lives (as described by the apostle John, in…1 John 2:15-16), is walking in darkness…and is in rebellion to living a life that will be pleasing to the Lord…  Here is a link to some scripture verses about the sin of walking in darkness…   http://bible.knowing-jesus.com/topics/Walking-In-Darkness
As Christians, our desire should be to please God first, and not ourselves…  The Bible clearly teaches us that Christ’s church is a universal body of believers, with Christ as its Head…Ephesians 1:22-23…  At the local church level, the church is a body of believers that gathers together for worship…fellowshipping with each other to join in a unified body for Christ…   Ideally, each believer uses their spiritual gift God gives to each of His redeemed children (1 Corinthians 12:4-31) to bring about growth of the body…where every member shares a common bond of love and concern for fellow members of Christ’s church…1 Corinthians 12:25-26
I see the gathering at my church of my brothers and sisters in Christ, as my counsel of fellow believers, who help support and encourage each other with the common goal of glorifying God…  We help each other in our Christian walk by exhorting each other to walk worthy of our calling…Ephesians 4:1-6…
I believe the following 2 scripture verses in Proverbs; speak of the Christian who lives in isolation, without becoming part of the unified body of Christ…Proverbs 18:1A man who isolates himself seeks his own desire; He rages against all wise judgment.  (NKJV)
Proverbs 11:14…  Where there isnocounsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.  (NKJV)
Heavenly Father, I pray Your Word seen today, will work in the hearts and minds of all of those who have spent little or no time reading the Bible…  I pray Lord, that those in need of hearing the truth from Your Word would be drawn in by You (John 6:44)…and that defensive walls of pride would be turned into a humble desire to learn more about Your will and Your ways…  I pray for this fullness of Christ to permeate all of our lives, in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…
Blessings in Christ,  bruce r mills

  1. Great advice, Bruce. I use gotquestions.org often. It’s a part of Global Media Outreach so we use it to find answers. As you said, we must be teachable.
