Luke 9:23… Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. (NKJV)

Many people call themselves Christians, and yet continue to rely on themselves instead of seeking help from the Lord, day in and day out… I am here to tell you that there is a much better way to live one’s life; and it starts with total submission to the Lord in becoming a follower (disciple) of Jesus Christ… I came across this answered question found @ http://www.gotquestions.org which does a good job at explaining the difference between a Christian and a disciple of Christ… It can be read at the following link… http://www.gotquestions.org/Christian-disciple.html

Jesus tells us this, in… John 8:31-32… Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (NKJV)

Abiding in Jesus’ Word, means the true disciple of Christ understands, obeys, and practices Jesus’ teachings; which can best be learned by habitually spending time reading, digesting (Matthew 4:4), and then putting into practice what Jesus and His Word reveals as the inerrant truth God wants all of us to understand and obey…

I hear some Christians say… “I don’t have time to read the Bible…especially every day”… Some Christians have told me they don’t go to church, because it is the one day of the week that they can sleep in… My friends, this kind of thinking is contrary to what God teaches us in His Word, the Bible…and sadly, will lead to a life that is not being conformed into the image of Christ…Romans 8:29… There are many verses in the Bible, in the Old as well as the New Testament, that teach us that we will reap what we sow… Here are two of them…

Jeremiah 17:9-10… The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? 10 I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. (KJV)

Galatians 6:7-8… Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. (NKJV)

I remember years ago, when I was too prideful to stop and ask someone for driving directions when I found myself lost… This was years before GPS, smart phones, and my salvation… I would waste time and gas, many times going in the wrong direction, instead of stopping to ask for help… This same pride keeps us from submitting our lives to the Lord, and following the direction of the Holy Spirit that God has given to ALL of His redeemed children…

It doesn’t matter what major challenge we face as a Christian… If we consult with the Lord through prayer and supplication before we make any of life’s most important decisions…God will always direct us in what He knows is the best path for our lives… If we have been graced with salvation in our pre-adult years…among many other things, we should be seeking God’s help for choosing an occupation…for finding the right college (or whether to attend college at all)…and for finding the right person we should be dating, that might lead to a life-long spouse… Any marriage, with God’s help, will have a much better chance of truly last until death separates us…

I could go on and on about the blessings and the rewards (Hebrews 11:6) God will give to His children who are doing their best to live in His will as a disciple of Jesus Christ… Is it easy to be a devoted disciple of Christ ?? No one ever said it would be easy… But God’s blessings of absolute peace beyond our mortal understanding (Philippians 4:6-7)…the fullness of joy (John 15:11) the Lord will provide those who follow Him through obedience to His commandments…and the ability to love even our enemies…goes beyond anything we could ever experience without (as the Apostle Paul puts it) being filled with the fullness of God, when he penned this, in…

Ephesians 3:19… to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. (NKJV)

And true disciples of Jesus Christ have God’s promise, through the full power of the Holy Spirit, that He will be “able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think”, in…Ephesians 3:20... Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, (NKJV)

This is my favorite piece of scripture for young Christian adults, which I hope and pray they will be able to truly understand…so that the full power of the Holy Spirit might be allowed to take total control of their lives at a time when some of life’s most challenging decisions must be made…

I am reminded of an audio lesson taught by Francis Chan, on exactly what being a disciple of Jesus Christ means… He lists 7 questions we can ask ourselves, to see how we stack up to what makes a disciple of Jesus Christ… Click on this link… https://s3.amazonaws.com/multiply/audiobook/p1-s1.mp3

This audio lesson is from Francis Chan’s book titled…“Multiply”, that can be found at http://www.multiplymovement.com under “Material” (Listen to Session)… The idea behind this book, just as the Lord instructs us in His Word, in…Matthew 28:19-20…is that we as disciples are to go out and make other disciples…

I will end with this key piece of scripture penned by the wise Solomon, in… Proverbs 3:5-6… Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. (NKJV)

Heavenly Father, help all of us to understand that Your way is the only way that will lead to an abundant life on earth (John 10:10), filled with Your richest blessings and rewards…and an eternal life in the presence of Your Son Jesus Christ in heaven, when we pass on from this short life… I pray that Your living and powerful Word would cut right to the very core of the souls that fall short of living a Spirit filled life (Ephesians 5:18-20), as a true disciple of Jesus Christ… I pray for this fullness of Christ in all of our lives, in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…

Blessings in Christ, bruce r mills
