2 Corinthians 7:10…  For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. (NKJV)

There are people believing they are a Christian, who will spend their whole lives doing good works in the name of the Lord, in order to become good enough at their death, to be allowed by the Lord through those pearly white gates into heaven…  Their belief in a works based salvation has been typically taught to them in the same church that their parents and perhaps their grandparents went to…  Their church’s doctrine is based on a combination of biblical scripture, and a list of man-made requirements that have changed over the years, that they must try to live by their whole life, in hope of being good enough to enter the kingdom of heaven when they die…

Jesus warns us about not believing in this false works based salvation, when He spoke these words, recorded in… Matthew 7:21-23 Noteveryone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Yourname, cast out demons in Yourname, and done many wonders in Yourname?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knewyou; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’”  (NKJV)

Jesus taught us about the only way into heaven, when He spoke these words, in…John 14:6Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. Noone comes to the FatherexceptthroughMe.” (NKJV)  The way is through understanding and obedience to the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ… (See link at the bottom for more on God’s grace)  The truthis found in the Word of God, and it will set the sinner free from Satan’s chains of bondage to sin…John 8:32And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (NKJV)  And the “lifethat Jesus speaks about, is eternal life in heaven with His Father…

Jesus’ first spoken words in the Gospel of Mark, were recorded inMark 1:14-15… Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”  (NKJV)

True repentance with godlysorrow is what the opening scripture reveals is required, to be graced by God with salvation…  But the Christian’s need to Repent, and believe in the gospel doesn’t end when they become a Christian in God’s eyes…  True repentance, with continuous faith and trust in the Lord, needs to become a way of life for the Christian, who wants to live as a true disciple (follower) of Jesus Christ…

Any sins that we commit after we become a child of God, are sins that are committed against God, not man…  David, a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22), after he committed the horrendous sin of adultery with Bathshebaand then conspired to have her husband Uriah murdered (2 Samuel 11), wrote Psalm 51a prayer of repentance to God…  We see David pen this, in…Psalm 51:4Against You, You only, have I sinned,  And done this evil in Your sight—That You may be found just when You speak,[ And blameless when You judge.  (NKJV)

As Christians, if we speak hurtful words against someone else…we should immediately tell them that we are sorry, and ask them to forgive us… Ephesians 4:26-27…   We do this because we feel guilty, and want to make things right…  But this visible sin of using hurtful words, is only a sign that we have an internal sin with-in our heart…a sin beneath the sin…  It might be anger, or bitterness, or envy which has caused us to sin with our mouth…  Jesus teaches us this, in…Matthew 15:18…  But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man.  (NKJV)

Saying that we are sorry to the person we have spoken hurtful words to, is a false repentance…  We can in no way begin to make things right in our own strength…  We must go to the Lord with the same godly sorrow we had, when we first became a Christian…and with true repentance and a contrite heart, confess our sins before God…  Only God can fix a heart that has become defiled with sin…

The apostle John pens scripture that explains the necessity for us to repent and believe in the gospel, whenever we find ourselves out of fellowship with the Lord because of unconfessed sins… 1 John 1:9If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  (NKJV)

If we as Christians want to do our best to live lives that will be pleasing to the Lord…we should be constantly asking the Lord to reveal our hidden sins to us…just as David did, when he penned this, in…Psalm 139:23-24Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if therebe any wicked way inme, and lead me in the wayeverlasting.  (KJV)

If we seek to apply this truth that we as Christians should Repent, and believe in the gospel as often as we find ourselves sinning…we will find ourselves freed by God’s grace, to live gospel centered lives powered by the Holy Spirit, that God has given to every child He has graced with salvation…

Heavenly Father, help all of us that are Your redeemed children understand this freedom in Christ that we will experience, if we would learn to apply the gospel of Your Son Jesus Christ to every area of our lives…  I pray for Your grace to abound in all of our lives, in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…

Blessings in Christ,  bruce r mills
