The River Walk

Daily Thoughts and Meditations as we journey together with our Lord.

John 6:32-35 (Bread of Life)

Posted on May 10, 2014  by BJ Richardson                                                                  Bread
Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, Moses didn’t give you bread from heaven. My Father did. And now he offers you the true bread from heaven. The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” “Sir,” they said, “give us that bread every day.” Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
(John 6:32-35)

Read: Psalms 35 – 38

Relate: I AM the Bread of Life. Come. You will never hunger again. Believe. You will never thirst.

There is so much truth packed into this short statement, there is so much power to unpack, I almost don’t know where to begin.

I AM – When Moses first encountered God at the burning bush on Mount Sinai, he asked, “Who shall I say sent me? What is Your name?” God answered him, “I AM who I AM. Tell them I AM sent you.” Seven times Jesus makes an I AM statement combined with a powerful analogy. He reveals to us more fully just who God is. Jesus says, “If you know me, you will also know my Father.” Over and over He demonstrates this truth in both what He does and what He says. Jesus is the Great I AM. Jesus is God alone.

Bread of Life – Bread is a staple. In Palestine at this time it was an essential for life just as rice or potatoes would have been in other parts of the world. Being such a staple, it is symbolic for all food in general. This comes down to us today through the phrase “breaking bread together” Jesus is the staple for our life. Everything else is just embellishment. It is window dressing. Without Jesus there is no life. He is essential for life and sustenance.

You will never hunger… thirst – I talked about this more thoroughly in the post Never Thirst when Jesus made a similar statement to the Samaritan woman at the well. In short summary, Jesus is the only thing that satisfies. Everything else will leave us wanting more. Everything else will bring only a short, temporary, incomplete fulfillment. Only Jesus fills that deep longing within us.

React: Come… Believe – The crowds chased after Jesus hoping for another miracle. They followed Him from one side of the lake to another hoping for more food. Jesus responded in saying there is no greater miracle than in believing me.(6:29) I am the food that will truly satisfy.(6:35) Then He offers an open invitation. Come… Believe. That invitation is still good for us today. This is the game changer. He has what we need. He is the fulfillment to our every good desire. He is the answer to our every penetrating question. He is our life. He is God. Will we come? Do we believe?

God, I come to You. I have pursued other things long enough. I have gone my own way plenty enough. Now I stop, and turn, and come to You. Help me to follow You all of my days. I believe You. You are the answer. You are all I need. You alone are God.
