“Walk in the Truth”

(Revised from 1/17/2014)

John 8:31-32… Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (NKJV)

We are in the Books of 2nd and 3rd John in our men’s Bible study. The other morning, we saw the word truth being used by the apostle John, 12 times in these 2 extremely short Books. I believe I counted the word truth 23 times in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd John. Here is a link for a word search of truth, in the NKJV version of these 3 short Books.

What is the apostle John trying to teach us, through this word “truth”…that even Jesus used to describe Himself, in…John 14:6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (NKJV)

Let’s go back to the Gospel of John, and take a look at how Jesus used the word truth, in…John 8:31-32… Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (NKJV)

Close analysis of these 2 verses, is the key to not only becoming a Christian…it is the key to walking in sweet fellowship with the Lord, after you become a Christian in God’s eyes. Just knowing that Jesus is the Son of God, is just not going to get you past those pearly white gates of heaven, in order to spend an eternity with God the Father. Even Satan knew who God was…Isaiah 14:12-15

At “The Last Supper”, Jesus tells His disciples He is going away to be with His Father in heaven. Jesus then tries to comfort His disciples by telling them He is going to prepare a place in His Father’s house for them; and will come again later to receive them to Himself…John 14:1-3… Jesus then tells His disciples (and us) that we must go “through” Him to get into heaven, in this scripture above… John 14:6… Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (NKJV)

The “way” is through understanding and obedience to the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, after being drawn in by God the Father…John 6:44… (See link at the bottom for more on God’s grace) This is the “truth” that is found in the Word of God. And by God’s grace and His mercy, receiving this truth will set the sinner free from Satan’s chains of bondage to sin…John 8:32… The “life” that Jesus speaks about, is eternal life in heaven with His Father.

But once God graces the new believer with salvation (through saving faith alone in His Son Jesus Christ…Ephesians 2:8-9), and they are filled with the Holy Spirit (John 14:26)…they must remain walking in this truth in order to continue in Spiritual peace, as they are filled with (being controlled by) the Holy Spirit…Ephesians 5:18-20

God has given the believer the Holy Spirit to guide them in ALL truth. Jesus explains the coming of the Holy Spirit to help and comfort His disciples, right at the end of His personal time with them, in…John 16:12-14… “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.” (NKJV)

Jesus then gives His disciples (and us) these last words of encouragement, just before Jesus makes His final prayers to His Father…John 16:33… “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (NKJV)

This peace we as Christians will have “in” Christ, is a supernatural peace God gives to His Spirit filled children. We are walking in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16), when the Holy Spirit is in total control of our lives. Friends, this is why I have titled today’s writing “Walk in the Truth”. We must walk in this truth, as we do our best to abide in God’s Word (and His will), to allow the power of the Holy Spirit to keep Satan (and our own flesh) in check.

And to walk in the Spirit, we as God’s redeemed children can not be living in sin, with any unconfessed sins being harbored with-in our hearts and lives. Any unconfessed sin will separate us from the sweet fellowship that walking with the Lord will provide. To attain this “Walk in the Truth” with the Lord, we must confess, repent of, and turn from any and all sins. God will bless us with His peace, His joy, and a fullness of Christ…giving us the ability to love all of those around us (even our enemies), that only being filled with the Holy Spirit will bring into our lives.

1 John 1:9… If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (NKJV)

Friends this supernatural God given peace “which surpasses all understanding”…is written about by the apostle Paul, in… Philippians 4:6-7… Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (NKJV)

Anxiety, hatred, anger, bitterness, and any other ungodly emotion in our lives, is caused by our own sinful flesh…or by Satan and/or his fallen angel demon friends. I spent two days last year writing about “Reaching Your Summit”…which gives my personal testimony on how to reach a level of spiritual maturity to overcome much of our sin nature, and Satan’s temptations to sin. It all boils down to being totally clad in God’s whole 6 piece set of spiritual armor that the Christian must put on one piece at a time (Ephesians 6:10-20)…and total submission to God through obedience to the Holy Spirit, to keep Satan in check…James 4:7-8

These 2 days of writing can be found @ http://www.Godsmanforever.com by typing 7/15/2013 and 7/16/2013 into the search window. Friends…walking in the truth that God’s Word will provide, has to be experienced to be believed. Once we as Christians truly allow the power of the Holy Spirit to control our heart, mind, and soul (as we put on the Lord Jesus Christ…Romans 13:14)…we will hopefully never again fall for Satan’s bag of tricks to bring us back into his world of sin and shame.

I am reminded of Psalm 34 written by David, which epitomizes the happiness of those who place their faith and trust in the Lord…and are walking under the full power of the Holy Spirit. Here is the link… http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=ps34&version=NKJV;KJV

Here are a few key verses from this encouraging scripture…Psalm 34:8-10… Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! 9 Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him. 10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger; But those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing. (NKJV)

Heavenly Father, I pray Your Word will be read with a newfound excitement and joy, as hearts and lives are filled with love by the fullness of Your Son Jesus Christ. May we all experience the richest blessings You reserve for Your obedient children. I pray for this ability to “Walk in the Truth” for all of our lives, in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…

Blessings in Christ, bruce

    Hi Bruce,

I appreciate this posting especially when you emphasize that…

“to walk in the Spirit, we as God’s redeemed children can not be living in sin, with any unconfessed sins being harbored with-in our hearts and lives. Any unconfessed sin will separate us from the sweet fellowship that walking with the Lord will provide.”

Very well explained. Lord bless you.
