Psalm 31

“Where’s Your Security Deposit?”

“The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us everything he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people.” Ephesians 1:14 NLT

Whether leasing a house or apartment or a car, the leassor usually requires a deposit to secure the lease. Reservations are not held after a specified time unless they are guaranteed by a deposit. Most contracts of any kind require consideration and “earnest money” deposits to be binding.

All this is being said to bring up the question of the security of our reservations for heaven. It is amazing that so many professing Christians questions are basing their security on their own goodness. “I have tried to live a good life”, “I have helped others.” “I have been a good wife or husband”, “I have ___________________” . seems to be the answer of a majority of people asked why they are going to heaven.

When we consider that God’s standard is perfect holiness, we can understand the danger of basing our assurance of heaven on our goodness is ludicrous. We have all sinned and fallen short of the perfect holiness of God. Our goodness is as “filthy rags” in the sight of God.

Our reservations for heaven are secured only by the blood of Jesus Christ, the perfect, unblemished Lamb of God who becomes our righteousness when we believe that He died on the cross for our sins.

God has even sent us the Holy Spirit as a security deposit guaranteeing that: “He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;” (Philippians 1:6).

No wonder we should joyfully sing: “my hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness.” if anyone should ever ask about the reason for our blessed assurance of going to heaven.

Father, thank You for confirming my reservations by the power of Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
