“Membership Has its Privileges”

“Compared to the high privilege of knowing Christ Jesus as my Master, firsthand, everything I once thought I had going for me is insignificant—dog dung.” Philippians 3:7    MSG

We live in an age of privileges. Many things that used to be privileges have become rights. We can buy all sorts of membership privileges.

Sometimes we get a little mixed up about fellowship in a local body of believers. We can get very self-centered and demanding, as though we are doing the church a favor by belonging or attending.

Even worse, we tend to view church attendance as an obligation, rather than a privilege, and we need to be very careful. Whether it’s in giving, loving, or attending church, God doesn’t like anything that’s done grudgingly or under compulsion.

Belonging to a fellowship of believers is not only a right and a command, but also a privilege. Jesus earned us the right to become His brothers and sisters by His death on the cross. We are commanded not only, not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together, but to: “Think of ways to encourage one another to outbursts of love and good deeds.” (Hebrews 10:24 NLT)

God created us not only for fellowship with Him, but for fellowship with each other. This can and should take place within the fellowship of believers. We share salvation and we share the Holy Spirit with other believers. There is a lot of joy to be found in growing in our relationship with each other as we grow in our relationship with the Lord together.

Father, thank You for the privilege of fellowship with other believers. May I never forsake it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
