The Revelation Of Jesus Christ: “…repented not …”

SIH TOTT ICONRev 9:20-21 KJV – And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

John now sees something incredible to behold. After receiving great judgments from the hand of Almighty God, John sees men refusing to repent of their sins. This situation is not unique however. Throughout the Word of God we find examples of men who were punished by the Lord and yet still refused to repent…

2 Chron 28:22 KJV – “And in the time of his distress did he trespass yet more against the LORD: this is that king Ahaz.”

Jer 5:3 KJV – “O LORD, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.”

John 5:39-40 KJV – “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.”

How can this be? All of us, due to our fallen natures, was born opposed to God and unable to do anything to save ourselves ….

Rom 8:7-8 KJV – “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.”

The only possible hope to receive the forgiveness of sins and escape the wrath to come is found in the intervention of the Lord in our life, bringing us to Himself…

John 6:44-45 KJV – “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.”

Because of this, as Christians, we cannot save anyone, nor can we talk them into saving themselves. The Lord draws men to Himself through the Holy Spirit’s application of the gospel message to the lost individual…

Rom 1:15-16 KJV – “So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”

What is our responsibility as Christians? To share with the lost the gospel message which can “persuade” them to come to Christ. (2 Cor 5:9-13) This persuasion takes place as the Holy Spirit takes the gospel we have spoken and applies it to their hearts and lives drawing them to Himself.

May we all think on these things today and find encouragement to be a witness for our Lord!
