(From bruce)  It is with a heavy heart that I post Robert’s last devotional. Robert W. VanHoose, went to be “home with the Lord”, on April 12th ,2015. In Ocala, Florida.

Robert posted 2 devotionals almost every day, which still amazes me… What an amazing example of love and devotion that Robert used to glorify the Lord !!

“Keeping Up Appearances”

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” Galatians 5:22, 23 NLT

The world seems to be obsessed with keeping up appearances. We spend billions on cosmetics, clothes, and even face lifts in order to project our image in what we believe to be a favorable light.

“Clothes make the man,” and “you are what you eat,” are just two of many slogans promoting appearance consciousness.

As believers we know that people look at outward appearances while God looks at the heart.

We need to be more mindful of keeping up appearances as we go out into a sin-sick world. We may very well be the only Jesus someone will see today, or at least be the only one of His personal representatives with whom someone may come into contact.
When our hearts are right, our appearances are going to show it. We will be bearing the fruit of the Spirit in every area of our lives.

The world should see the difference God’s extreme makeover has made in the way we talk, the way we walk, and the way we live. Others should be drawn to us like flies to honey, wanting whatever it is that makes us so joyous, so content, so kind and loving.

What kind of impression of Jesus will people see when they come in contact with us? Are grumpiness, irritability, and constant complaining and self seeking the appearances we want to project to others?

We are called to be not only believers but imitators of Jesus Christ. This means that we should be modeling His love, kindness, gentleness, humility, and compassion to others. This is what real “keeping up appearances” should be all about.

Father, keep me ever mindful of my need to “keep up appearances,”
to glorify You, and let Your light shine through me. Amen.

P.S. (From bruce) And the light of Christ did shine through Robert for decades… Here is a link to an article about Robert, for those who want to read about his life.
