Satan the great dragon that opposes the people of God…

SIH TOTT ICONRev 12:3 KJV – “And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.”

In this vision, John sees “a great red dragon” which symbolizes Satan. The NT word for “dragon” comes from a Greek word meaning “to see”. It carries with it the idea of a serpent’s ability to fascinate and enthrall those who are enticed by him.

How fitting for Satan! From the beginning of sin at the fall, Satan has been able to fascinate humans, getting their eyes off their Lord and fixated upon him. This is what his temptations are all about. Getting our eyes off our Lord and His desires for us and locking our attention upon himself and the subject of his enticement.

Please note, in addition to the book of Revelation (12:4,9,17; 13:2.4; 16:13; 17:3,4; 20:2), Satan is also described as a “dragon” in Isaiah 27:1 and Isa 51:9…

1. In the first OT reference, we find the dragon is entitled “Leviathan” which means “twisted one” or “entwined one” which describes His deceptive nature.

2. In the latter reference, he is given the title “Rahab” which means “proud boaster” describing his selfishness nature.

What a harmful foe we have walking among us! (1 Peter 5:8-9) He is one that is able to captivate our thoughts and our attention. He is one that is selfishly deceptive, attempting to manipulate us to fulfill his wants. He cares nothing about our good, but is willing to bring great harm upon us and the cause of Christ to get his way in our hearts and lives.

He is the one that we cannot successfully face on our own. His power is so great, that he is described as a “ruler of the darkness of this world” (Eph 6:12), a part of “spiritual wickedness in high places” (Eph 6:12) and “the god of this world” (2 Cor 4:4). We should never underestimate the ability that Satan possesses to mislead us.

If we do underestimate his ability, we will find ourselves relying on our own strength to oppose him. He was, is and always will be stronger than the strongest among us. Our only hope to overcome such a strong foe is through Christ and His gracious intervention in our lives…

1. We are told that “greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
2. Also we are told that “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.” (1 Cor 15:57).

In Ephesians 6:10-18, we are told that the key to overcoming Satan is found in the proper application, and use, of the spiritual armor that the Lord gives to each of His people. In doing so we are equipped, through God’s gracious intervention, to overcome the wicked one.

Finally, as Satan tries to captivate our thoughts and desires, may we all humbly flee to Christ, the only One that can be our spiritual rock and fortress. By fleeing to Christ, we are recognizing our great need of Him as we will take our attention off Satan and his workings. We are placing our eyes steadfastly upon Christ, recognizing all He has done for us, turning from any known sin in our lives, and willingly submitting to His will…

James 4:5-10 KJV –  Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

May we all be lifted up by our Lord as we face our already defeated foe.
