Seeking Whom He May Devour…

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour…” ~ 1 Peter 5:8

This past week the terrible reality of this verse was experienced by the AME Mother Church in Charleston SC. Nine brothers and sisters in Christ were murdered by a young man consumed with hate and in a terrible state of confusion about this purpose and place in life. Without Christ in his heart he became a puppet used by Satan to strike a wound deep into the heart of a Christian fellowship making an impact for good on its community and Gods kingdom.

Yet what the enemy of our souls meant for harm, God is and will continue to use for good to bring glory to his name and win souls into his Kingdom for all eternity. I stand amazed at the reaction of so many to this horrible event. The church was packed to overflow the Sunday after the murders and a reported 10,000 people of every skin color and race filled the streets outside to support this congregation. Forgiveness flowed out of the hearts of these wounded saints and only by Christ and Christ alone could this have happened.

The historic norm for the Church and God’s people is to be subject to persecution and attack. We don’t have that history to fall back on in most of America. The African American Church in the USA is the exception has a much clearer understanding of that historic reality than their white counterparts. In today’s increasing secular and hostile to the Gospel culture, we would do well to bond with and look to them for lessons as to how to not just survive but to thrive in a culture that marginalizes and oppresses those they hate. O Lord make us one in your Spirit.

May the Lord help us to always be on guard for the evil one and to remember this verse:

So be subject to God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him], and he will flee from you.” ~ James 4:7 AMP

George Duffield, Jr.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus! ye soldiers of the cross;
Lift high His royal banner, it must not suffer loss:
From vict’ry unto vict’ry, His army shall He lead,
Till every foe is vanquished, and Christ is Lord indeed.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus! The trumpet call obey:
Forth to the mighty conflict, in this His glorious day;
Ye that are men now serve Him against unnumbered foes;
Let courage rise with danger, and strength to strength oppose.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus! Stand in His strength alone,
The arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your own;
Put on the gospel armor, and watching unto prayer,
Where calls the voice of duty, be never wanting there.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus! the strife will not be long;
This day the noise of battle, the next the victor’s song;
To him that overcometh a crown of life shall be;
He with the King of glory shall reign eternally

May the Lord watch over and keep you in his Love and care and use us all to spread the good news of Jesus Christ in word and deed to the lost in our nation.

In Jesus name, amen.
