The Powerful Sword Of The Lord!
Revelation 19:21 – “And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.”
The weapon that is used by Christ to defeat the powers of darkness at His second coming is symbolized as a sword that proceeds out of His mouth. What does this sword symbolize? In both Old and New Testament Scriptures, we find God’s Word being pictured as a sword…
Isaiah 49:1-2 – “Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.
And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me;”
Isaiah described His ministry of proclaiming God’s Word as “He hath made my mouth like a sharp sword”. Using the a sword to picture God’s Word that he spoke.
Ephesians 6:17 – “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:”
Paul, under the inspiration of the HS, tells the people of God to be equipped with God’s Word as they prepare for spiritual warfare against the powers of evil. He describes God’s Word as “the sword of the Spirit”
Hebrews 4:12-13 – “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.”
Here the writer of Hebrews describes the Word of God as being “sharper than any two-edged sword”. He goes further describing the Word’s work as that of cutting, piercing and separating… “piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow,”
Folks, based upon the above passages, it is easy to see that our Revelation passage is referring to God’s Word being spoken by Christ at His coming that will defeat all of His enemies. This is the sword that is proceeding out of the mouth of Christ.
Stop and think about what this means. Christ will defeat all of His enemies simply by speaking to them. His powerful Word will defeat all of the hosts that oppose Christ as He speaks against them.
Oh, how powerful is God’s Word!
We have read of God simply speaking the world into existence (Hebrews 11:3). He resurrected Lazarus from the dead by simply saying “Lazarus come forth” (John 11:43-44). And also, He defeated Satan’s temptations through the same Word (Matthew 4:2-11). Now, we see Him utterly defeat all His enemies through this same, powerful, Word (Revelation 19:11-21).
May we all come to understand the power of His Word and see the importance of using it as the chief offensive weapon against the temptations that are set before us. By reading, studying, memorizing and distributing His Word in the midst of a lost dying world we are “tapping into” one of the greatest sources of power available to us as we seek to serve our Lord “in Spirit and IN TRUTH”!
