“It’s Better to Give than to Receive”

Proverbs 3:9-10… Honor the LORD with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase; 10 So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine.  (NKJV)

All of God’s children are called to honor and glorify God… The opening scripture has Solomon telling us that we should use our possessions to bring honor to the Lord… One way we can do this is with our tithes and offerings we give to our church… The Bible has much to say about giving… Our gifts should always be made with a joyful heart, without thoughts of what we might receive in return… The apostle Paul tells us this, in…

2 Corinthians 9:6-8But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.  (NKJV)

God wants to bless those that give back a portion of what He has given them, as long as their motives for giving are done for the right reason… God knows our hearts, and He knows how much we have in our bank accounts… It’s not about giving because we have to…it’s about giving from the heart without expectations in return…

As you consider family and friends you are going to give gifts to this Christmas, think about giving a gift to someone you expect nothing from in return… It might be a needy family who has a hard time paying their bills, much less being able to give their children Christmas gifts… It might be a non-profit organization like my nephew Sam Bloch started several years ago, who helps those affected by natural disasters…  Sam has most recently established a division in the Philippines… ( www.Communitere.org )     It might be a local shelter for the homeless… God will see your gift, but Jesus Himself, warns us about bragging to others about our generosity…

Matthew 6:1, 3-4 “Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. 3 But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.”  (NKJV)

So this Christmas, if God has blessed you with more than you need, help others with your resources… Look for someone around you who could use some help, and bless them with a gift… It could be monetary, or a gift of your time… The apostle John tells us this, in…

1 John 3:17-19But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? 18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 19 And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him.  (NKJV)

Heavenly Father, I pray these scripture verses from Your Word, would stir the hearts of all of Your children…  Motivate us Lord, to share that which You have abundantly blessed us with, to help those around us that are less fortunate; especially at this most blessed time of the year… I pray for a special blessing now Lord, for all those who help someone in need…in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…

Blessings in Christ, bruce
