“How to Prosper in the New Year !!”

Written by bruce r. mills for www.Godsmanforever.com

(Revised from 1/01/2014)

Joshua 1:8…  This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.  (NKJV)

The opening scripture has the Lord giving Joshua instructions during a pep talk, so to speak…  Moses had passed away…and God had commissioned Joshua to carry on the task of crossing the Jordan River, to bring the Israelites into the Promised Land…

New Year’s resolutions are a dime a dozen for most people…  I have made my share of New Year’s resolutions in past years…to exercise more, or to start eating a better diet to lose weight… But if you’re like me, these resolutions usually don’t last very long…  Here is a commitment that will get better with time !!

Today I urge you (if you aren’t already) to start the New Year by trying to spend time every day reading God’s inerrant Word, the Bible…  Jesus Himself urges us to do so,   in…Matthew 4:4…   Whether you are a Christian or not…reading this Book of instructions that has been “God breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16-17), has the capacity to change your life forever…and I mean for an eternity !!

You see, God’s Word is living and powerful…  I wrote about “The Living Word” a  while back, that can be found by going to www.Godsmanforever.com and typing 12/16/2013 into the search window…

This writing posts scripture verifying that the Word is actually Christ Himself…and that the Trinity has existed from the beginning of Creation…

John 1:1-3In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. (NKJV)

(See also…John 1:14Genesis 1:2b…&...Colossians 1:15-16)

When I say God’s Word is living and powerful, these aren’t my words…they are found in…

Hebrews 4:12-13 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.  (NKJV)

The  Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is at the very heart of what God’s Word is all about…  This is the “Good News” gospel message that sins can be forgiven by God’s grace and mercy; which Christians have been commanded by Christ Himself to share with those around them in need, in…Matthew 28:19-20…  (See note at the end for more on how to become a Christian in God’s eyes)

But once Christians have been graced with salvation…their spiritual growth and their ability to prosper in the eyes of the Lord, are in large part dependent on feeding upon God’s Word…

Matthew 4:4  But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”  (NKJV)

We see the Lord in the opening scripture telling Joshua (and us), this about God’s Word…  that we should “meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it”…  As Christians we don’t have to spend that much time reading and meditating on God’s Word…  But if we want to learn how to please God, we do have to read the Bible so that we can understand how to “do according to all that is written in it”…

Some Christians may say that understanding the Bible is hard for them…  Jesus’ half brother James gives us this advice, in…

James 1:5…  If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.  (NKJV)

I recommend praying for wisdom to understand what you are about to read in the Bible…and I also recommend a good study Bible…  The notes will help explain difficult passages…  I personally use the NKJV study Bible, written by John MacArthur…

I have heard it said time and again…“I just don’t have the time every day to read the Bible”…  I am here to tell you that we as Christians can’t afford not to spend this valuable time communing with the Lord every day in His Word…  It’s God’s Word (the sword of the Spirit…Ephesians 6:17b) where all 6 pieces of God’s protective spiritual armor are learned about, as penned by the apostle Paul, in…Ephesians 6:10-20… (Here is the link for this important scripture…  http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=eph6%3A10-20&version=NKJV;KJV )

When we put on all 6 pieces of God’s spiritual armor (Ephesians 6:11)…and we have totally submitted our lives to the Lord (Galatians 5:16)…Satan will be all but helpless in successfully attacking us…

James 4:7-8 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.  (NKJV)

As you spend time in the Word, you will grow in spiritual wisdom; and by understanding how to please the Lord, and how best to walk in God’s will and God’s ways…you will be being conformed more and more into the image of His Son, Jesus Christ…Romans 8:29…  The 9 fruit of the Spirit, as listed by the apostle Paul, will slowly mature in our lives as we grow closer to God…

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.  (NKJV)

And as we grow closer to God, “He will draw near to you”…  These aren’t just words on a page my friend…  When we have Christ at the center of our lives, and we do our best to remain filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18-20) as a follower (disciple) of Jesus Christ…God will bless us over and above all that we could ask or think…

Ephesians 3:20…   Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,  (NKJV)

This “power that works in us,” is the full power of the Holy Spirit…

This, my friends, is how we as Christians will prosper in the New Year !!  With God on our side, as we are walking with Him…who can be against us ??  The apostle Paul says this best, in…

Romans 8:30-31Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified. 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?  (NKJV)

These are pretty powerful words…  But God’s Word is true…  Get behind God this New Year…  Let Him direct your steps…Proverbs 3:5-6…  And step back and watch God “make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

Heavenly Father, I pray Your Word will urge all of us…no matter what state of spiritual maturity we now possess…to see the importance of spending daily time feeding upon Your glorious and precious Word…  I pray that all of us will make You priority number One, as we grow closer to You in this coming year… I pray for this fullness of Christ in all of our lives, in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…

Blessings in Christ,  bruce
