Why Are You Still in the Shallow Side of the Bible Pool?
By Patrick Hawthorne
To make shallow the Word of God is to produce spiritual illiterates. Yet, this is what too many self-appointed or weak knee ministers are doing. Brandishing their copy of “Bible for Dummies,” they claim to lead their congregation into the water of God’s Word but never venture beyond the Kiddy Pool. Boasting of great knowledge gained from the world’s most elite thinkers, they ignore the Giver of thought.
“God will accept you as you are,” they boast with great fanfare, but then neglect to teach that God’s desire is to not leave you as you were. They have so shallowed the Word of God that it gives no opportunity for change, for regeneration. With a thumb in the eye of Jesus, they smirk at the price He paid for their reconciliation. With hands raised high they sing, “I am a friend of God,” yet as soon as the doors are shut run to the arms of their lover, the world.
Rise up you ministers who will not compromise the Word of the Living God. Rise up you ministers who will not teach a shallow version of God’s grace.
We who were once alienated and enemies of God, it was by faith in His grace that we were saved. It was through the shed blood of Jesus that we became holy and blameless, able to stand faultless before our Heavenly Father. We are no longer our own, but belong to Him.
Rise up you ministers. Challenge your congregations to live a life of holiness. Challenge your sheep to remain firmly planted and steadfast in the Gospel. Shout from the roof tops, you ministers of the Word of God, “Look unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; do not give up, back down, or fall away. Rise up and let your conduct be holy as He is holy.”
21 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled 22 in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight— 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister. (Colossians 1:21-23 NKJV)
