“Christian Sanctification Explained”

John 17:17Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. (NKJV)

We as Christians, if we are truly graced by God with salvation, WILL be conformed into the image of Christ… See Romans 8:29 below…  The indwelling Holy Spirit that God has given to EVERY redeemed child of His, will urge us to immediately start God’s sanctification process… (More about this later)…

But will we start growing in our spiritual wisdom and love for the Lord at salvation…or will we decided to wait a while, before we start living for Christ ??  Will we continue to please ourselves, seeking what we want, over what God wants for us…or will we seek to please God, by placing Him first and most important in our lives, as we obey the urging and guidance of the Holy Spirit ??  The Apostle Paul pens this, in…

Romans 8:29For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. (NKJV)

How do we become more like Christ ?? By spending time (hopefully every day – Matthew 4:4), reading, digesting, and then putting what we have learned in God’s Word into action, in everything we say and do…as the Holy Spirit continues to urge us to walk down God’s path for our lives…  The Apostle James explains this in…

James 1:22-25But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. (NKJV)

What does the word Sanctify in the opening scripture mean ??

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it means:

sanctified sanctifying

1: to set apart to a sacred purpose or to religious use : consecrate

2: to free from sin : purify

We as Christians have been set apart from the world, for the specific purpose of glorifying God…  One way we do this is by becoming more like Him through a process called “progressive sanctification”… (see link at the bottom for an excellent 3 part breakdown)

The first step in progressive sanctification begins on the day God graces the unsaved sinner with salvation…(see 2. below for a Gospel presentation, on what obeying the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ means, to be graced by God with eternal life in heaven…)

The second step in progressive sanctification, takes a lifetime to complete…as we as Christians are called to grow in grace, in spirit and in truth, on a day by day basis…by gradually being conformed into the image of Christ (Romans 8:29) …  We should reflect this transformation of our lives, so that others should be able to see the light of Christ is us…

Matthew 5:14-16  “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven(NKJV)

Can those around you see Christ in you ??  You will be no different from them, unless you are walking in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16), as a Spirit filled Christian…Ephesians 5:18-20…  You cannot decide to live in rebellion to the leading of the Holy Spirit, by living with un-confessed sin in your life…and be able to glorify God by living for Him at the same time…Matthew 6:24

I know this personally, because I was living in sin for quite some time after I was saved, when I somehow took back control of the Holy Spirit in my own life…  I either didn’t listen to the urging of the Holy Spirit to humble myself before Him, and seek God’s will for my life…or my ears weren’t attuned to hearing the Holy Spirit’s urging, because I wanted what I wanted…when I wanted it…  My God given peace and my fullness of joy in Christ (John 15:11) were gone…

Satan had me right where he wanted me…because I wasn’t sharing my faith with anyone around me…  He was winning the battle…but Satan should never win the war, in a Christian’s life…  God led me to read a sermon by REV. C.H. Spurgeon from 1859, that was titled…“Grieving the Holy Spirit”…  I urge every reader not living for the Lord, to open and read Spurgeon’s sermon titled…“Grieving the Holy Spirit”…found in 3. below… Read at least Section III, if you don’t have time to read it all…

It was June 4th, 2009, after reading Spurgeon’s sermon, that I realized how much I was grieving the Holy Spirit…  I could see myself, with all the pain I felt, as though Spurgeon was preaching to me…   I got down on my knees, and begged the Holy Spirit to take back control of my life…  Praise God that He did just that…and my peace and my joy in the Lord immediately flooded back into my heart, mind, and soul !!  Praise the Lord for His grace and His mercy !!

I am reminded of what the Apostle Paul pens in…Romans 12:1-2  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.  (NKJV)

We as Christians need to renew our minds each and every day, before we step out into this world of sin and shame…  We do this, through prayer…through spending time feeding our soul by reading God’s Word (Matthew 4:4)…and by becoming part of a Bible believing and teaching church, as part of their church body… (See 4. Below for finding the right church)…  God has given EVERY Christian a spiritual gift, that He wants us to use to help our church grow in grace and love for Him…and to help cause growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.”  (Ephesians 4:15-16)

As we mature in our spiritual walk with the Lord…our life should become less and less about ourselves…and more about growing in God’s grace and truth…as we are urged to share our testimony and/or the Gospel of Christ with those around us in need of hearing the truth from God’s inerrant Word…  This is progressive sanctification stage 2 (a lifelong process), which should continue to conform us into the image of Christ, until the day we die…  At that point, we as Christians will immediately enter stage 3 of sanctification…when we are in glory, standing face to face with our Lord and Savior !!

Colossians 3:4…   When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.  (NKJV)

If we as Christians’ have placed our faith and trust in the Lord, and are living a Christ centered life, we should have confidence that God will complete His work of conforming us into the image of His Son…  I believe this, because God tells us this through the Apostle Paul’s writing, in…

Philippians 1:6…   being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;  (NKJV)

So get out of your own way, and allow God’s promise to conform you into the image of His Son begin sooner, rather than later…  You will be pleasing God, and at the same time God will be rewarding you with His richest blessings for your diligence in allowing Him to mold you into the best you can be…

Blessings in Christ,  bruce
