Photograph my ancestors on the prairie of Montana over a hundred years ago.
We hear a lot today about the pioneer spirit – especially in regard to the first woman president. I’ve already cast my vote and I feel I’ve made the right choice. I hope that some day we do see a woman in this most prestigious position, but I want to see one of stellar character – one who has proven that she can get the job done – one who I can trust to tell the truth and work for the people rather than herself.
Every president we’ve ever had in our short history, has come under some kind of scrutiny and many of them have been involved in some sort of scandal. We tend to expect much more of those in authority – those making decisions for us – those who negotiate honestly.
My ancestors were what I would call, true pioneers. They trudged across country with horses and covered wagons to begin a new life. The women gathered buffalo chips to start campfires, did their laundry in a muddy river or rippling stream, cooked over an open fire sweat alongside their husbands as they built a new frontier. Men hunted for dinner and children worked hard too. They weren’t simply served from a silver platter or given anything they wanted just because they felt worthy of it. These folks didn’t have time or energy to get involved in shady dealings. By the end of the day, they were exhausted from hard work.
Times change and our pioneers of old are indeed a thing of the past, but new inroads are being made every day. As we think about the possibility of a woman president, let’s not be hasty to elect the first one that comes along just because of her gender. Be wise in this decision. Our choices today are going to lay the ground work for the future. No amount of experience is going to erase corruption in character.
God has already decided who our next president will be. Whatever the outcome, we need to remember He is in control and He has a plan for the results – no matter if we like them or not. He will bring good out of any situation.
