What Does It Mean to Live By Faith?

We are great about including faith as a necessary element for salvation, but what about for daily living? What about serving and sustaining faith? Let’s take a look from Hebrews 11 at what it means to live by faith.

  • Stepping out of your comfort zone (Hebrews 11:8, 9). God called Abraham at the age of 75 to leave where he was with no clear direction about where to go. Abraham left his hometown of Ur to go to a better place God had for him. When you and I step out of our comfort zone, His plan for us is always better than where we are.

  • Seeking greater things (vv. 10, 14-16). Abraham understood that this world was not his home but that he had a home in Heaven. People of faith are people of vision. George Barna said that “vision is the ability to understand the history, the present condition, and the potential of the church, and to conceive a plan for action that will maximize the ministry potential. Vision always entails progress: it is never satisfied with the status quo.” Bob Logan said, “A godly vision promotes faith rather than fear. A godly vision motivates people to action. A godly vision requires risk-taking. A godly vision glorifies God, not people.” People of faith always look ahead.

  • Sacrificing everything (vv. 17-19). God promised Isaac to Abraham for many years and later calls him to sacrifice Isaac as a test. When you and I are living by faith, we understand that faith demands a sacrifice.

  • Suffering persecution (vv. 24-27). Here you see that Moses chose to suffer affliction with God’s people to enjoy sin’s temporary pleasures. The remainder of Hebrews 11 points out named and unnamed people who suffered persecution for their faith. We are not exempt.

Are you satisfied with your faith level right now? Is it moving mountains, or it is enough to keep you afloat? May I challenge us all to bigger faith? Let’s stop believing for enough to survive. Let’s believe for enough to thrive!

P.S. (from bruce)  I came across this question answered by www.gotquestions.org   “Why do so many people struggle with a lack of faith?”…  It is an excellent addition to today’s post…  Please spend some time reading this, and many other related posts at the bottom…if you struggle with absolute faith that God is in control of your life…

  1. Let’s not forget this piece of sage advice also; “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” — Hebrews 11:6.
It stands to reason that if it is impossible to please our Heavenly Father WITHOUT faith, then it IS possible to please Him WITH faith! How marvelous is that, that someone as lowly as each of us can actually PLEASE the God of Creation, just by walking in faith?!!
Great post as usual, Brother Bruce!
