Red and yellow, black and white, we are precious in his sight, Jesus loves the little children of the world.
You can’t be forty years old, raised in the south, have a Baptist grandmother and not know the tune to those words. It was the mantra of every Sunday school, but times have changed. Today’s mantra has evolved into a chant stating that lives matter; black lives, blue lives, all lives; it all depends on where you stand. What does that mean for the Christian community? What is our mantra today? Christians are not blind to the injustices that plague our nation today but often times we are silent.
The racial divide in America is nothing new. I understand that justice may not happen in my life-span, but I have children and grandchildren that will inherit the world I leave them. I understand that justice may not happen in their lifetime, but I have to teach them to carry the torch that will blaze a trail for the generations after them. It may be that justice might not happen in this life at all. This doesn’t mean that I keep silent in the midst of today’s chaos. My hope is not bound by the earth’s limited time and as a Christian I have an eternal perspective. But this hasn’t always been my understanding. In my unrest over injustice I have been guilty of joining my voice with those that seem to be shouting the same message and marching in the same direction, but after the shouting faded and the marching stopped I found that we did not have the same fire!
Black Lives Matter (BLM) was founded by three women after the outrage over the death and the injustice surrounding Travon Martin. Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opel Tometi came together and started a movement that has swept our nation. I applaud the work they do for the black community that extends far beyond issues of injustice, but after further research I found that BLM, along with groups like Power U and Dream Defenders have core principles that are just not a part of my beliefs. I understand that these groups never professed to be Christian organizations. In fact none of their bios profess any affiliation with any type of religion but they boldly identify as black queers and transnational feminist. This is why it is important for me as a Christian to do my research. Yes black lives do matter, and at the end of the day we are all human and we need to be treated with dignity and respect. But in other aspects of this movement I can not lift my voice and chant a mantra that affirms feminist, transgenders, and gays. My voice screams a message of freedom, purpose, self-love, and love for others. This is my mantra because it’s God’s mantra. I am passionate about family; fathers and mothers are the hope of the black community. Seeing gender genocide breaks my heart –but I will save that for a different blog.
I am not part of a movement but I am part of a community of believers born into this generation not to judge people but to bring true healing. This kind of freedom can only come through Jesus.
It is every Christian’s responsibility to discern the times we live in. We must refrain from movements that don’t advance God’s agenda unless we can be a catalyst to make sure it does. As believers we have to be careful not to get caught in this wave of protest without making sure our voice is an extension of God’s words. We need to be sure that we are leading people as we follow Christ. We need to be aware of underlying social agendas that creep into these movements. Do your research before you hashtag, post, like a page, or support any activist driven group.
The question is, “What really matters?” The answer is, “souls”! #soulsmatter
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.– Romans 12:2
