“Why You should like God’s chastising as His redeemed child”

Proverbs 3:11-12…  My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor detest His correction; 12 For whom the Lord loves He corrects, Just as a father the son in whom he delights. (NKJV)

As parents, we should always do our best to guide and direct our children in doing what is right (especially ages 2-5)…  We teach them about the dangers of touching a hot stove…  We explain that they should look both ways before they cross the street…  We look out for their safety when it comes to touching electrical outlets, and to don’t allow them to pet strange dogs they see, when we take them for a walk…  We do this to train them in what is best for their lives, because when they are young, they don’t yet understand the dangers life can present…

If we are Christian parents…we are to bring up our children, teaching them what is right in God’s eyes…  I am reminded of what the wise Solomon pens for us, in…

Proverbs 22:6Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.  (ESV)

In looking up this scripture verse, I found a link with 51 scripture verses about training up our children God’s way…  It must be important to God, to have so many pieces of scripture about training both young children, and His redeemed children…  You can see this long list of scripture verses in 2. below, for some extra Bible reading and training…

Are our children happy when we correct them from doing something we feel is wrong ??  I would have to say, from my personal experience now with my 2 year old grandson…that they usually get upset when we tell them to stop doing something we feel is wrong…  But we love them too much not to do our best to guide and direct them in ways that will hopefully help them become first class citizens later on in life…

Well God loves His redeemed children even more than we love our children and grandchildren…  So much so, that He sent His only Son down to earth to live a fully human life (and yet fully God)…for the primary purpose to suffer and die on the cross to take on the sins of the world…  Christ shed his blood to cover the sins of those who seek Jesus Christ to become their personal Lord and Savior, by understanding and obeying the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ…  (See 1. below for a presentation of the Gospel of Christ…to become a “born again” Christian, by God’s free gift of grace alone, through saving faith alone in Jesus Christ)

We as “born again” Christians, have been saved by God’s grace to live our lives in ways that will honor and glorify God…  Becoming a disciple of Christ and allowing the Holy Spirit to take total control of all that we say and do, should be our goal each and every day we wake up…  Jesus tells those around Him (and us) this, in His inerrant Word…as penned by the Apostle John, in…

John 8:31-32…    So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  (ESV)

My friends, abiding in God’s Word, means we should spend time (hopefully every day), spiritually feeding upon God’s Word…  Jesus Himself tells us this, in…Matthew 4:4…&…Luke 4:4…  We need to read God’s Word…digest it…and apply everything we learn to help us walk in spiritual maturity that God wants for ALL of His redeemed children…  How can we know what God wants us to learn, if we don’t spend time reading the Bible ??  This is where we learn about God’s 6 piece set of protective spiritual armor, that we are to put on piece by piece…to keep Satan and our own carnal flesh in check…  You can read about God’s spiritual armor, in…Ephesians 6:10-20

We are also called to submit our lives to God…and allow the Holy Spirit to guide us and protect us from Satan’s attacks…  We CAN keep Satan in check, as we see the Apostle Paul pen, in…

James 4:7-8…   Submit yourselves therefore to GodResist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.  (ESV)

I spent a day writing about putting on God’s whole set of spiritual armor, and our need to submit to God…in a day’s writing I titled…”God’s Duo”…that can be read at the link in 3. below…

Just like we try to train our children to live in a way that will be pleasing to God…God uses the Holy Spirit to train, guide, and protect us against anything that goes against the will of God…  Since any known sin left unconfessed will grieve the Holy Spirit…Ephesians 4:30…God not only has the right to chastise His wayward children…God promises He will chastise and maybe even scourge the ones He loves…to bring them back into living a life that will be glorifying  God and pleasing to Him… (open the link in 4. below for an excellent description of what grieving and scourging the Holy Spirit means !!)   We see God’s promise of His chastening and scourging of His unrepentant children, in this scripture penned by the writer of Hebrews, in…

Hebrews 12:5b-6…  “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.”  (NKJV)

Here we see scripture backing up the scripture in the opening 2 verses, in… Proverbs 3:11-12…  Why should we as Christians be happy God will chastise and maybe even scourge us, if we continue to live in unrepentant sin ??  We see one reason why we should be happy God is trying to correct us, in this scripture, in…

Hebrews 12:8-9…  But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sonsFurthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live?  (NKJV)

My friends…when the writer of Hebrews pens this…then you are illegitimate and not sons…they are saying we may think we are Christians…but without chastening, we have not yet become a redeemed, “born again” child of God… Be thankful for a loving, caring Father in heaven, who wants the very best for us by chastening us when we go astray…

Because God is sovereign…everything He does for His redeemed children, is done because He loves us, and wants us to live in His will for our lives…Romans 8:28…  When we stray from God’s perfect will for our lives…we should be happy when God wakes us up by chastening us, to bring us back into submission to living a godly life…

I just don’t understand how any true Christian could prefer to live with unrepentant sin, no matter how enjoyable it may seem at the time… knowing that sooner or later God promises to chastise them…  The writer of Hebrews tells us why this short-lived enjoyment one receives from sinful pleasures should be stopped, confessed, and turned from (1 John 1:9) before our loving Father…before God has to reprimand His wayward children, in…

Hebrews 12:11…   Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.  (NKJV)

God’s chastisement can be painful, if we don’t listen to the urging of the Holy Spirit, urging us to turn away for any sin, and back to living a life that God will bless…  God blesses us by giving us  the peaceable fruit of righteousness that will flood the heart of God’s children that are walking in the Spirit, (Galatians 5:16)…in and by the full power of the Holy Spirit…  (see 5. at the bottom for an amazing commentary on…Galatians 5:16…and the many benefits to walking in and by the full power of the Holy Spirit as a Spirit filled Christian)

As I mentioned before…God want all of His redeemed children to come to a point in their spiritual maturity…where they understand that the spiritual blessings God will shower upon His obedient children, as they grow and mature in their spiritual walk with the Lord…will far outweigh the material or self-gratifying pleasures the believer will receive, as they live in disobedience to God’s will for their lives…

Cut to the chase my friends…  Start living for Christ, and start benefiting from the 9 spiritual fruit (Galatians 5:22-23) that will grow and mature, as you submit to God’s will…  If you consciously commit to living in and by the full power of the Holy Spirit…you will be blessed beyond believe, and wonder why it took so long to start living for Christ !!

Gracious God and heavenly Father…I pray that You would open the eyes of all of Your redeemed children, to see the wisdom of Your Word…and the promises You make throughout the Bible about how You will bless those who live their lives in Your will and Your ways… I pray for this fullness of Christ in each and every one of our lives…in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…

Blessings in Christ,  bruce
