A debate occurs over what word is being spoken – Laurel vs. Yanny.  The whole thing goes viral.  A father watches on his phone as his child is born far from him.  Again the whole nation talks about it.  A wedding occurs in another country between a member of the royal family and an American.  We go ballistic and can’t get enough of the pageantry.  In the midst of all this, another shooting – another senseless loss of young lives – the altered mind of child is the perpetrator – we can’t make sense of it, but every one has an opinion.

Have our senses become so numbed by the frequency of this sort of thing?  Do we quickly make a judgment that is far too complex to figure out?  Do we blame the guns, the video games, bullying, mental illness, too much violence in our world, alcohol, drugs, too much screen time?  Of course all those things contribute and need to be addressed, but I just don’t understand what’s happening to this country of ours as a whole.

Lives are immediately changed when death occurs.  Especially when children are involved.  What’s happened in the last six decades to affect how we handle our problems?  Why have so many children become negative in their thinking – the victims or purveyors of bullying  –  addicted to the internet?  We hear about pre-teens who are so sad they need to be medicated.  Young children with learning disabilities are medicated so they can fit the norm.  They see their parents using pain killers to erase the pain and feel this might help them too.  Add to that a social network which allows hateful words to be spewed upon those same young minds.  To the mix, throw in a family life that is virtually non-existent – being cared for by outsiders – or focused on striking it rich of losing the love and respect of their children – a cloistered life pasted to a screen that displays every ugly thing known to man.

In the olden days, we would get together with friends after school – run, play, get some kind of physical exercise.  We’d talk face to face or on the telephone.  The only entertainment we had was Saturday at the movies, Howdy Doody and Clarabelle, the daily news on TV and slumber parties.  We worked out our differences through discussion or argument – not violence.  Kids said mean things to each other one day and forgot about it in 24 hours.  We often resorted to using our imagination to figure things out.  With all that imagination, computers were born and immediately changed the way folks lived.

Our minds have been infused with information at a rapid rate.  We can punch in a subject and get 150 sites that talk about it.  How much can the human brain manage?  If you didn’t have ADHD before, you probably do now.  We multi-task.  We order anything on the internet and get it in a day.  We actually don’t need to leave our homes anymore.  We’re cocooned, yet a slave to a computer screen.  The day isn’t far off when human beings will have no physical interaction or communication skills.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.  We’ve strayed from our old fashioned morality.  We’re exposed to all kinds of deranged behavior on our TV screens and at the movies.  Churches have lost their influence on people.  They don’t want to hear about sin.  We’ve given way to flashy super stars, anything goes, live for today and don’t worry about tomorrow – just eat, drink and be merry.

There a million reasons why these horrendous things happen.  We can’t rightly pin the solution on one of them.  I believe it’s a combination of things, but the fact is, it isn’t going to go away until we start addressing some of these problems and changing the way they’re being handled.

We certainly can pray about it – for God tells to ask for anything in Jesus name.  Our prayers are heard.  We can stop blaming someone else for this epidemic of terror that sweeps across our country.  We need to look at our own homes – our own communities – become involved and do something about it, rather than speculating on the causes.

Dear, Lord, you are the ruler and creator of our world,  You must be so disappointed in the way we’ve all played a part in it’s demise.  When countries fall it’s usually because men fall. We fail to follow You, we put our faith in things that make us happy and successful.  We need more than possessions and things.  We need You in our lives.  Only You can change the pulse of our nation.  I put my trust in Your unconditional love and pray that you lead us out of this deception which the devil is trying so hard to make us believe.  Hear my prayer, in Jesus name, dear God.  AMEN!
