Quick Devotional from Ephesians 6:11 (Observation from the Greek)

This is from my daily Greek exercise of sight reading a few months ago, courtesy of Vincent S Artale Jr.

Our text is from the Greek translation of Ephesians 6:11.  Here is my translation:

“SENTENCE 11 ἐνδύσασθε τὴν πανοπλίαν τοῦ θεοῦ πρὸς τὸ δύνασθαι ὑμᾶς στῆναι
Put on the Armor of God in order you be able to stand

πρὸς τὰς μεθοδείας τοῦ διαβόλου”
against the scheme of the devil

Here are some observations:

  1. The main verb here is a command in light of the Greek imperative verb ἐνδύσασθε which has the idea of “put on.”  As an imperative it is telling us that this is something we are to do; it is not optional.

    1. This is a command for not just an elite few; the second person plural in the context likely is referring to the whole church.  Every believer is obligated to this command.

  2. What is the believers suppose to put on?  The verse here tells us it is “the Armor of God.

    1. What does the Armor consists of?  Ephesians 5:13-17 tells us: “Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.“

    2. You will notice these items referring to that which is a resource God has provided to all Christians.  It is worth spending time studying each item on your own.

    3. Also note this Armor is from God (Greek genitive of possession).  If we don’t know our Old Testament we might miss the richness of the Old Testament that Paul is tapping into when he refer to the Armor of God.  This is referencing Isaiah 59:17: “He put on righteousness like a breastplate, And a helmet of salvation on His head; And He put on garments of vengeance for clothing And wrapped Himself with zeal as a mantle.”  In the context this armor is what God puts on!  He puts it on to accomplish our salvation (Isaiah 59:16)!  When we put on the Armor of God we are putting on something that works, for it is what saves us from our sins!

  3. What is the purpose of putting on the armor of God?  A purpose clause follows the command and tells us this: “in order you be able to stand against the scheme of the devil”

    1. Stand in the Greek refer to a military stance of being combat ready.

    2. We are to be prepared to deal with the schemes of the devil.  The word “schemes” in the Greek is where we get the root for the English word “method.”

    3. We are to know that there is a spiritual warfare and we have a real enemy against us.  But don’t despair; God has provide for us not only saving grace but also sanctifying grace and spiritual warfare grace.

  • Do you realize there’s a real spiritual warfare going on?  Are you in the fight?  Or have you surrendered and pulled out of the combat line?

  • Have you trusted in the ordinary means God has given as your armor?  That is, have you sought Christ’s righteousness, meditate on salvation God has provided, faith in God and also God’s Word?

  • If you struggle to rely on this Armor, realize God Himself has “put it on” and it works!  Christ Himself has use the ordinary means of Grace described in each element of the Armor of God; it works, for Christ has been victorious against sin and Satan!

  • Knowing this armor is from God should humble us and leave us no room for bragging about any self-righteousness or self-independence.  It is a gift from God, unmerited by us.  What a grace to think about this!

  • Have you realize the purpose of why you put on the armor of God?  I think of the armor we carried and put on in the Marines; one will never put it on unless they understood the war is very real.  Suddenly its important and not just a hassle.   Likewise realize the spiritual war is real; so put it on!  Make it a regular practice to know your “gear!”

  • Sometimes some Christians can sensationalize spiritual warfare; note here most of the items in the armor of God is defensive rather than offensive in nature.  I think we got to understand our own weakness and our own hubris and rely on Him instead of thinking in our own strength and wisdom we can take on Satan.  Turn to God readers!
