Do You Have to Try to Get to Heaven? Can You Know You’re Going?

Several years ago, I went with my grandfather to get some medical supplies for my grandmother. Over the course of the conversation with the lady who worked there, the subject of church came up. I asked where she went to church. She named the church and made the statement, “We’re all trying to get to the same place.” I left the store and thought later about how I should have told her she didn’t have to try. She could know for sure.

In a competitive world where we feel we have to earn everything, we have brought God down to our level. Some have this idea that God has a scale in Heaven. If the good outweighs the bad, one makes his or her entrance to Heaven. But how good is good? Who defines it? Me? God? The Bible says that our version of righteousness is like filthy rags, so how can I please God enough to get into Heaven?

Jesus said there is only One way – Him! Even with that said, some cannot accept that our acknowledgment of sin which results in a changed life and the blood of Jesus to cleanse us is enough. They think we still have to add some good works to that. Scriptures teaches us that we become the righteousness of God in Christ when we are born again (2 Corinthians 5:21). We are in Christ, who is perfectly righteous. His blood is our covering.

With that knowledge, do we still have to guess, hope, and try to work our way into Heaven? Let I John 5:13 speak for itself: “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.” This verse says you can KNOW. How? Because you have believed in the name of the Son of God. You don’t have to wonder or guess.

This is not a license to sin and do as you please. You are called to a life of holiness because you have trusted in Christ. I know this may not set well with what some of you have been taught, but this is the Word of God. Don’t depend upon your good works to get you to Heaven. They will never be enough. Jesus’ death is enough. He paid it all. Let His blood wash away your sin and rest in His finished work.
