“Watch Your Mouth !!”

Matthew 15:11…   it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.”  (ESV)

These words spoke by Jesus Himself…are words that we as “born again” Christians, should pay very close attention to…  If you are indeed a “born again” Christian, [See 1. below if you are not “born again” by God from above – John 1:13 ], everyone around you will pay attention to what you say, and how you react to different situations and trials you are faced with…  This, my fellow brother or sister…will be the case, if they know that you have been saved by God’s grace !!  Our whole persona should stand out like a beacon of light atop a light house, as the light of Christ shines forth from everything we say and do…

Jesus has already taught us this, back in the Beatitudes, starting in…Matthew 6:1 through Luke 6:26…when He tells us this, in…

Matthew 5:16…  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.  (ESV)

I must inject right here…based upon my own life experiences…that our unredeemed flesh will respond negatively to someone yelling in our face, if we are not walking in and by the FULL power of the Holy Spirit…  The Apostle Paul pens this, in…Galatians 5:16…  But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. (ESV)

Our unredeemed flesh does not have the power to love someone screaming in our face…  My personal testimony reveals that I had two shouting matches with a fellow brother at my church (both in less than a year), when God wasn’t first and in control of my life… But God was faithful to urge me to read a sermon by Rev. C.H. Spurgeon, that was preached way back in 1859…where he preaches on “Grieving the Holy Spirit”…[See 2. below for a link to this possibly life changing sermon – It changed my life !!]

It was 7 years and 2 days from the time God had graced me with salvation, that God led me to read Spurgeon’s powerful preaching !!…  My God given peace, and the joy of my salvation (Psalm 51:12), were gone…  Spurgeon preaches that the Holy Spirit is patient and long-suffering when we turn our backs on Him… But with free will given to man…the Holy Spirit won’t force us to live for Christ…

Spurgeon preaches the the Holy Spirit finally gets to a point because of our sinful rebellion, where He is going, going gone !!  I had never heard of REV C.H. Spurgeon before…and I said to myself…”Should I even continue reading this sermon??”  I believe that “once saved, always saved”…so that the indwelt Holy Spirit will never leave us…  REV. Spurgeon then says…”You will still go to heaven when you die !!”  But your life will be no better than an non-believer…until you get down on your knees, repent and turn from your sins, and plead for the Holy Spirit to take back control of your life…

I did just that, and prayed a prayer based upon the Apostle John’s scripture, penned in…1 John 1:9…   If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  (ESV)

My sin of not placing Christ first in my life, is called a sin of omission…as penned by the Apostle James, in… James 4:17…  So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.  (ESV)  I prayed for God to take back control of my life, to fill my life again with the joy of my salvation, and to restore the blessings God showers upon His redeemed, obedient children…  God was faithful to do just that !!

I am reminded of…Hebrews 11:6…   But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.  (NKJV)

This reward for diligently seeking God is not, in my humble opinion, a monetary reward…  It is a spiritual reward that is listed in the 9 fruit of the Spirit, as penned by the Apostle Paul, in…  Galatians 5:22-23…  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.  (ESV)

Wow…that was quite a long interjection !!  But I believe God is using my personal testimony to bring Him honor and glory !!

God answers any prayer that is in His will for your life !!  These aren’t my word…  They are found in this scripture penned by the Apostle John, in…

1 John 5:14…   Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.  (NKJV)   [See 3. below for an excellent article on 6 prayers God always answers]

After praying for God to take back control of my life…I was again filled with the Holy Spirit…Ephesians 5:18-20…  And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,  (NKJV)

This isn’t the original filling of the Holy Spirit, that occurs at the moment God graces us with salvation…  This occurs when we as “born again” Christians confess, repent, and turn from our sinning ways…to again allow the Holy Spirit to take back total control of our lives !!  Walking in and by the FULL power of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16) has to be experienced to be believed !!

This walk with the Lord in control of our lives, is a moment by moment walk…[See 4. below for an excellent commentary of Galatians 5:16]   Any sin that befalls us, will at least hinder the fellowship we have with the Lord, because God hates sin…  I believe it will break our sweet fellowship with the Lord…if we live in continuous willful disobedience to the urging of the Holy Spirit to turn from our sins… This is exactly what happened to me…when, for a prolonged period of time, God was not first and in control of my life !!

Getting back to the original topic of “watching your mouth”…Jesus tells us this, in…Matthew 5:43-44 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you(ESV)

I could not respond with love to my brother screaming in my face, because the Holy Spirit did not fill my heart with the spiritual fruit of Love, when I wasn’t walking with the Lord in control of my life…

You absolutely CAN love someone screaming in your face…when the Holy Spirit gives you this supernatural ability !!  But you have to submit your life to God…James 4:6-7…   But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you(ESV)

I should probably change the title of this post to something like “Let your light shine before men”, because the Holy Spirit took control of my post right after I posted… Matthew 5:16…   But I believe the title “Watch Your Mouth !!” might get more readers to open and read this post…

Heavenly Father, I thank You and praise You for the many blessings You have showered on my life…  I pray Father, that Your scripture, which is living and powerful (Hebrews 4:12-13), will cut right to the heart of those who are not yet Your redeemed children…that they might seek Your Son Jesus Christ to become their personal Lord and Savior…  I pray Father, that Your “born again” children, would understand how the Holy Spirit can bring them the many blessing that living in obedience to Your will and Your ways will provide in abundance…  I pray for this fullness of the Holy Spirit in every believers life, in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…

Blessings in Christ,  bruce

I am thrilled to see reference to the FULL Gospel here. I’ve done a lot of studying of the Holiness Movement at the turn of the century and when people are sanctified (the 2nd blessing) all the vitriolic and carnal anger is dissipated. Good blog!
