A Recipe for a Happy Life

Psalm 34:11-16

“Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry,” Psalm 34:14, 15

A recipe is a list of ingredients and the instructions for preparing anything. Happiness is a personal choice either connected to the environment or one’s attitude toward anything in life. If we ask one hundred people what happiness is, we would get a hundred different answers. All their answers will depend on one’s attitude, making lemonade out of lemons.

God measures happiness by Himself. “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up” (James 4:10). The advertising industry, in a materialistic society, makes their billions by planting the idea that ownership of their product will make one happy. However, most material possessions bring only temporary pleasure. Happiness based on the ingredients of godly living and peace is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, supernatural and satisfying to the soul.

When I was a child, I measured my environment against others who seemed to have a great deal more material goods than I. They looked happy; therefore, I concluded being poor makes one unhappy. Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for their’s is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). The emphasis was on the kingdom not the lack of purchasing power.

THOUGHT: “Folks are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be.” —Abraham Lincoln.
