Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them; otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
Matthew 6:1
Giving should be done with right motives and right priorities. Some people don’t give with a pure heart. Jesus spoke of the hypocrite who gave only to be seen of men. He said these kind of people give and then “sound a trumpet” to draw attention to their giving. Jesus warned us about “tooting our own horn”.
I have been blessed to have known many people who give to others in silence and it discreetness. They give because God has placed in their compassionate heart a desire to give. They don’t do it to be seen of men, or to draw attention to themselves. They give because their motive and their heart is right.
This morning I thanked God for the GIVERS among us. Some people have little but give lots. Others have lots but give little. And sadly, some give nothing at all. God reads hearts. And God rewards kindness. He rewards compassion and concern for the unfortunate. And I believe Jesus thought this principle: When we give to been seen of men, then what have we really done to advance honoring God or others? Our giving should be done in secret. Perhaps posting our good deeds on face book isn’t the right thing to do, if our motive has been right. For God sees what is done in secret. And God rewards right priorities.
