“Don’t let the sun go down on your anger”
Be ye angry and sin not. Let not the sun go down upon your wrath, and neither give place to devil.
Ephesians 4:26
The Bible warns of the danger of unchecked anger and unresolved disputes. It urges us to settle disputes quickly using the principles found in the Word of God. And this verse tells us that the longer we’re angry, there is a danger of allowing the devil to get a foothold on us, and lead us to do unwise things.
I have actually heard people “rehearse” their anger. In fact, I shamefully and sadly have to confess that I have done that very thing. We get angry, and then we allow that anger to consume us. And we start to plan ways we can get even with those who have caused our anger. Unchecked anger is a dangerous and unhealthy condition. It can lead to rage. And rage can lead to murder. That is exactly what happened in days of the first murder as we read the tragic account of Cain murdering his own brother.
Sometimes I get angry. I believe you likely experience this emotion too, at times. When I do, I ask God to take control of this emotion. Anger in itself is not sinful. But it becomes sinful when we refuse to let it go. Hard, calloused hearts of unbelief can cause us to allow anger to control us. Instead. we need to ask God to hold our anger in check, and control us as we endure this emotion, BEFORE we do something unwise, sinful, and tragic. Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath my friends.
