Nevertheless, the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us.
I Samuel 8:19
Sometimes, people chose to be stubborn. We become stubborn when we allow our self-will to overrule the will of God in our lives. The people of Israel demanded a king to rule over them. Their desire was to be like the heathen nations in their midst. Samuel knew they were making a grave error, but the people would refuse to listen to him as he proclaimed the word of God. You see my friends, the word of God contains and proclaims the will of God.
Samuel warned the people against trusting man over God. In verse 18, he told them this concerning their desired king: And you shall cry out in that day because of your king which you shall have chosen you, and the Lord will not hear you in that day.
Today, many people are more interested in hearing about the antiChrist than about the Lord Jesus Christ. You can fill up a building if you talk about the antiChrist. You see, people have been forewarned about trusting in any man. We are told again and again to trust in the Lord. But just like Israel of old, we often refuse to listen as God’s word is proclaimed.
This morning, I read the middle verse of the Bible again. It is found in Psalm 118:8. It rightly proclaims this: “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.” In WHO and WHERE do you place your trust, my friends?
