How to keep a vibrant faith

How do we live a consistent vibrant faith? To be vibrant means to be full of energy and enthusiasm. The etymology for the word, enthusiasm, is instructive. It’s directly from Late Latin enthusiasmus, from Greek enthousiasmos, meaning: “divine inspiration”…from enthousiazein to “be inspired…be rapt, be in ecstasy.” In other words, to be filled with the fullness of God (Eph.3:19) and His joy! (John 15:11).

This question of maintaining a vibrant faith is what Peter addresses, as I continue where I left off last time. In “Walking out our redemption,” we saw that while we’re saved once by grace through faith, our redemption is ongoing. Peter tells us we’re given the Holy Spirit to walk out this redemption—our transformation—so that we can experience all the promises of God meant for us.  And everything we need to do this is already resident in us because Holy Spirit lives in us!

Here’s how Peter continues with this theme:

10 For this reason, beloved ones, be eager to confirm and validate that God has invited you to salvation and claimed you as his own. If you do these things, you will never stumble. 11 As a result, the kingdom’s gates will open wide to you as God choreographs your triumphant entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Messiah. (2 Pet 1:10 TPT*)

“For this reason….” Peter is making a conclusion that we looked at last time, from verses 5-9. He’s saying that when we accept the invitation into this transformation process with Holy Spirit, we confirm and validate our salvation.

I’ve shared this Bill Johnson quote before: “A man who has an encounter is never at the mercy of a man with an argument.” By “adding to our faith” through this cooperative process with God, we encounter His love and are changed in the process! And these encounters are critical to our confidence in Him in more ways than just our personal transformation.

For instance, I’ve had scoffers and atheists ask me how I know God is real. That’s easy. My changed life! This is a picture of me in 1978. I was a 22 year-old musician living in Austin Texas. I wasn’t at the end of my rope, like some say in their testimonies; I was actually enjoying my life immensely. But I knew I was a spiritual orphan. And when God invited me into His life, I jumped right in! However, one thing that hasn’t changed in 42 years—there’s not a religious bone in my body! That’s because I wasn’t changed by religion (or fear) but by an intimate relationship with a God called Love. He has met me personally in so many transformational ways it’s beyond doubt for me.

We’re called to accept this invitation and cooperate with the Spirit in us. And Peter says If you do these things, you will never stumble.” As we “add to our faith,” or allow these fruits of the Spirit already resident in us to become manifest in our lives, God reveals Himself to us in a greater way, thus He becomes more real to us. This is the basis of my confidence and my constant source and supply of vibrant faith.

On that note, I will end with a song by Jonathan Helser that’s been a favorite of mine for many years, simply called, “Abba.” This song is significant to me because it really explains  how God the Father has become “Dear Papa” to me.

“You’re more real than
The ground I’m standing on
You’re more real than
The wind in my lungs

Your thoughts define me
You’re inside me
You’re my reality

Abba, I belong to You”

This particular version of the song is also my favorite because Jonathan explains the inspiration behind it, setting it up for us to express our hearts to our Abba Father. I hope you enjoy it, and that you have confirmed God’s invitation to you to experience Him, for He’s more real than the ground you’re standing on.
