Talking About God’s Omnipresence?

Slim over at “The Domain for Truth” recently did a post called, “This Sunday at Church: Talk to someone about God’s Omnipresence.” I thought it was kind of fun in the way that God’s perfect synchronicity is often fun.

So our pastor has also been talking about God’s omnipresence among other things, but specifically about Lazarus being raised from the dead. Jesus arrives and He wants them to roll away the stone from the tomb but Martha says, “Lord, he stinks already, for it is four days.”

I love that line! There are a lot of reasons why she says it, but in part she is trying to protect Him from decomposition, death, from being exposed to what is thought to be unclean, unholy. She might as well have been saying, “don’t go in there Lord, it’s icky.”

I did the same thing for a number of years, kept the dead things buried in a tomb behind a rock where not even God Himself could go, or especially not God Himself. A bit like Adam and Eve with their fig leaves we sometimes try to hide from God, or try to clean ourselves up first, or try to keep Him away in order to protect Him from what is icky.

He is such a gentleman, too. We don’t talk nearly enough about what a gentleman Jesus is! He simply will not go where He is not invited. He probably could if He wanted to, but He often honors our autonomy, our freewill. Instead, He stands by the door and knocks or in the case of Lazarus, He calls and tells you to come out. I am the resurrection and the life. He offers us healing, life and life abundant, in every area that we allow Him to touch.

God already knows, God has already seen it all through thousands of years of human history, times millions of people. There is nothing new under the “Son.” He knows what dead people smell like and He loves us anyway, in fact, He simply wants to love us back to life, back to wholeness. He just wants to do life with us, to heal what is broken, to lead us and guide us, to share wisdom with us, to build intimacy. Perhaps even to get us heaven-ready! There are no tombs in heaven, no dead things hidden away, and no grave clothes to tangle one up.

Some of us are such great protectors, such great defenders, heck, we’ll even try to protect God Himself from the nature of ourselves, perhaps because we fear rejection, or perhaps just because we can’t bear the thought of Someone else carrying our whole load for us, all the way to the cross.

Regardless of all the “whys” and “wherefores” that keep us separated, God is omnipresent, always available, He loves you more than you can imagine, and He really is in the business of bringing the dead back to life, if you just answer that call or open that door, and step into His light.

“The man who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
