SCRIPTURE WRITING PLANS

From Sacrifice to Sovereign: April 2021 Scripture Writing Plan

March 31, 2021Elihu

Each week, Christians around the world observe the Lord’s Supper. We are served small portions of unleavened bread and grape juice which symbolize Jesus’ body and blood offered for our sins. Because we do this on a weekly basis, it has the potential to lose its impact on our hearts.

One of the ways in which I try to stay focused during those quite moments is to read about Jesus’ sacrifice. Isaiah 53 is one of my most treasured passages because it not only talks about what Jesus did, but why he did it.

But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.

Isaiah 53.8, ESV

Isaiah reminds us that Jesus had the flesh practically ripped off His back, not because HE did wrong, but because WE did. Jesus had nails hammered into His body for MY sins. HE carried the cross to bring US peace with God. HE was humiliated because WE humiliated ourselves.

Being so far removed from the brutality of Roman executions, it is possible to lose sight of all Jesus suffered. May we never forget. This is why we are called to share the gospel with others, so that each time we relate the power of His sacrifice, we do not forget the cost of our own sins.

I hope you will join me this month as we write our way through the prophetic passages of Isaiah 53 and Psalm 22, concluding with the triumphant verses in Philippians and Thessalonians. Because Jesus died, we are at peace. Because He rose, we have hope!
