“God’s Word can comfort you”
Wherefore comfort one another with these words. (KJV)
1st Thessalonians 4:18
The subject of this chapter is the return of Christ. He IS coming! Paul admonishes us to remember to have a disciplined life and walk, while we look for the return of Christ. He encourages us to live clean lives, to keep studying the Word of God, to mind our own business, to continue to work until Jesus returns.
Paul reminds us to KNOW how to sorrow when we lose a loved one to death. He reminds us of the hope and assurance of the resurrection of those who sleep in the grave. And he tells us that the dead in Christ shall be raised before us. He compels us to believe in and remember the resurrection from the dead of our Lord Jesus Christ, and promises that when Christ comes for the church, He will bring those saints who have died with Him. And the last thing Paul tells us in the chapter is to COMFORT one another with these words. I thank God that Paul told us to comfort one another and NOT to torment one another.
When the gospel is preached, it ought to bring comfort to those who believe. When sin and judgment is preached, it should be tempered with the forgiveness available thru the shed blood of Christ. And people who bury the dead in Christ should know how to sorrow during that time. Our sorrow should never be a time of torment, but a time when we are comforted by the wonderful things God has promised to those who love and trust Him.
Therefore my brothers and sisters, I say to you again this morning, COMFORT one another with these words. Don’t torment each other with them! It is all about our attitude, and our attitude should bring forth right actions! Focus on Christ’s resurrection from the dead, and the fact that the dead in Christ shall ALSO live again!
