Resisting the Temptation to Compromise: Lesson from Exodus 8

Saw this from Exodus 8:24-28:

Then the Lord did so. And ^[v]thick swarms of flies entered the house of Pharaoh and the houses of his servants, and the land was laid waste because of the swarms of flies in all the land of Egypt.

²⁵ Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God within the land.” ²⁶ But Moses said, “It is not permissible for us to do so, because we will sacrifice to the Lord our God ^[w]that which is an abomination to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice ^[x]that which is an abomination to the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not stone us? ²⁷ We must go a three days’ journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the Lord our God, just as He ^[y]commands us.” ²⁸ Pharaoh said, “I will let you go, so that you may sacrifice to the Lord your God in the wilderness; only you shall not go very far away. Plead for me.” 

I thought there’s a good lesson for us all.

Moses is sent to free the Hebrews.  He was reluctant to take on this mission.  But Moses obeyed and follow God.

The journey wasn’t easy, even the very people he tried to saved went against Moses.  We see the discouragement recorded in Exodus. Still Moses followed God and brought about the plagues against Egypt.

But here note verse 25.  The swarms of insects was getting too much.  So Pharaoh offered Moses a compromise: sacrifice to God but do so within Egyptian land.

The compromise is easy to fall into: Serve God and also avoid conflict with man.

But Moses didn’t give in.

In declaring the truth of God’s Word, we should not too. This is true in our evangelism but it’s also true in our defense of the Christian faith (apologetics).

May we not compromise, standing on non-Christian grounds while thinking we are offering a sacrifice pleasing to God.

Obedience is better than sacrifice.

Speaking of sacrifice look to Christ, who didn’t flinch when He went to the Cross to be the sacrifice for our sins.  Let His commitment be something you meditate upon and move you to faithfulness by not compromising.
