Holiness Exalts the Lord: Scripture Writing Plan April 2022

March 31, 2022Elihu

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”

1 Peter 2.9

When you hear the word holy, what comes to mind?

Unfortunately, I think many people tend to envision a prideful, self-righteous mindset that disdains others as “lesser.” Far too many people in the past and present who claim to be Christ-followers have tarnished His reputation and the reputation of His church with their self-ordained superiority and self-proclaimed perfection.

So what does holy actually mean?

According to Strong’s concordance, the word “holy” is defined as, “set apart by (or for) God.”

Did God set you apart from the world when you were baptized into Christ?

Are you being transformed into something different?

Are you in pursuit of something intangible?

When God makes you and I holy, it is so we can work in His kingdom for His glory. In other words, we are not called to glorify ourselves or work for our own praise. Nor are we–like the Pharisees–supposed to look contemptuously on those who have not yet obeyed the gospel as though they are dirt beneath our feet. Like Jesus, we are expected to offer service and compassion to everyone in our path and encourage them to follow Him. Holiness should go hand-in-hand with humility, gratitude, and love.

You and I should never forget how lost we would be without the blood of Jesus. This idea of being “set apart” is not something we deserve. Like so many things, God has given us this gift and responsibility through His Son.

In this month’s plan, we will focus on this call to “be holy as God is holy.” Other words will pop up like “sanctify” which means, “to set apart as holy.” As you write through these scriptures, consider how being made “holy” should change your mindset, your choices, and how you treat others. Jesus is the ultimate example of how holiness is lived out in this dark world. As He has demonstrated holiness should be manifested in humility, obedience, and love.
