That title refers to an article in the NY Times by Shalom Auslander, one that is causing a great deal of fuss all about the intertoobz. Let the record show, I kind of appreciated it!
It’s a bit snarky, hinging close to satire, and demonstrates a bit of lefty political bias, but overall I found myself nodding my head and even chuckling a few times. I appreciate his “passover” joke, talking about how we tend to remake God in our own image, an old testament God of wrath and irrational violence, and how, “Perhaps we can stop extolling his brutality. Perhaps now is a good time to teach our children to pass over God — to be as unlike him as possible.“
Quite true. If we have created this false perception of God as a domineering, egotistical bully about to smite us, then our God-given morality will insist we reject Him outright. That is not God! Accept no substitutes, especially not those created by us.
This article outraged a lot of people because we tend to be such linear thinkers, not seeing the deeper meaning, not getting the pun. Someone recently reminded me that A&W once decided to compete with McDonald’s by creating a cheaper “third pounder.” Alas, they nearly went bankrupt, unable to convince the general public that a third-pound burger was bigger than a quarter pounder. Four is more than 3, right?? Must be bigger! So you see, there is ample evidence that people can be rather shallow thinkers and a bit short on the uptake.
Why did Jesus come? For many reasons, but one is to challenge our false notions of God, to bring us closer to Him, and to give us a tangible example of who He is and what His heart is all about.
Jesus did not come simply to tell us to turn the other cheek, to stop being angry about injustice, and to quietly accept our life as nothing but a vale of tears. He also came to flip over some tables in the temple, to upset some pharisee, to challenge the powers that be, and set the captives free. He came that we might have life and life abundant.
We serve a risen Lord, a victorious Savior, one seated at the right hand of the Father. There is no insecurity in Him, no ego, no wrath, no brutality, so no having to hang onto the edge of our seat to see which way the world is going to go.
It is finished. He is sovereign. He is risen.
