Mothers

Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. Exodus 20:12 (NIV)
This is for mothers.
For working moms, stay at home moms, single moms, married moms, divorced moms. For mothers with money and mothers without.
For mothers who’ve struggled with morning sickness and a painful labor.
For mothers who’ve sat up through the night with sick toddlers in their arms, changing diapers, cleaning up vomit, and saying, “It’s okay sweetie, Mommy’s here.”
For mothers who lock themselves in the bathroom when they don’t know why the baby is crying, and don’t know how to stop the crying.
This is for mothers who know all about sleep deprivation, preparing formula, and putting up with the smell of diarrhea.
For the mother with the ability to nurse a baby, cook dinner, and listen attentively to her husband, all at the same time.
For mothers who show up at work with spittle in their hair, milk stains on their blouse, and a soother in their purse.
For mothers who wake up with a jolt. For mothers who go from sleep to dread, from bed to crib at 3:00 a.m. to put their hand on the chest of a sleeping child.
This is for mothers at the end of their tether . . . who want to swat their two-year-old when he stamps his feet and demands ice cream for dinner.
This is for mothers who watch a son or daughter disappear into school, alone, for the very first time.
This is for mothers who, after hearing about a child that drowned, have a desperate need to seek out their own child, to hold and hug.
This is for mothers who read a favorite bedtime story. Then read it again when a sleepy voice says, “Please Mommy, just one more time.”
This is for mothers who taught their daughters to tie their shoelaces before they started school. Who taught their sons to say please and thank you. Who taught their children responsibility and respect.
This is for mothers who run car pools, make cookies, and tidy toy chests.
This is for mothers whose heads turn automatically when a little voice calls, “Mom?” in a crowd. Even when they know their own children are at home.
This is for mothers who sit on cold bleachers, cheering at sports events, so that when their child says, “Did you see what happened when . . . ?” They can say, “Yes, I saw it. Wasn’t that great?”
This is for mothers who sat down with their children and helped them learn right from wrong. Who modelled integrity and honesty. Who guarded their lips and watched their ways.
This is for mothers who grind their teeth when their seventeen-year-old gets a tattoo.
For mothers who teach their sons to cook and their daughters to sink a jump shot.
This is for mothers whose children have gone astray. Who can’t find the words or actions to reach out and restore their offspring.
This is for mothers who pick up clothes.
This is for mothers who chew their nails. Who spend time with daughters struggling to grow up. Who understand when it’s time for sons to go their own way.
This is for mothers who cry. Who cry when they’re happy and cry when they’re sad. Who cry just because . . .
This is for mothers who are going deaf. Who keep saying, “Will you turn that music down?”
This is for mothers with an empty nest. With quiet homes, with everything in place.
This is for mothers everywhere.
But it’s especially for mothers who find time to read their Bible and pray. For mothers who try to walk in the Way. For mothers who strive to follow Jesus every day.
This is for you.
For without you our children would flounder, our homes would crumble, and society would fall.
Thank you for being the best mom you can be.
