I Am Free

June 30, 2022Elihu

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death

Romans 8.1-2

I have been set free.

In studying the holocaust, I have often wondered what it must have been like for the survivors, who found themselves liberated from the hellish nightmare they had endured for so long.

Set free.

No longer abused.

No longer subjected to forced labor.

No longer imprisoned behind miles of the impenetrable fence line.

Set free.

They never doubted their imprisonment for a second, but they might have had concerns about the stability of their liberty.

We have all lived within the gripping imprisonment of sin at one time in our lives. Satan is quite skilled at making sin look like freedom & fun, but in reality, it is as miserable and as deadly as the imprisonment of those concentration camps. Sin has a cost… and the cost is death.

We do not have the power to liberate ourselves from sin. Only Jesus has the power to open the gates and set us free from death. With Him, we are liberated from hopelessness, nagging fears, and ultimate judgment. Unlike the concentration camp survivors, when Christ sets us free, nobody can take it away from us. This earth is plagued with despair, but Jesus emancipated us from the fatal snare of believing this world is “all there is.”

For July, we will be writing through Romans 8–a chapter that deals with the freedom we have in Christ. There are a few parallel scriptures I have inserted to correspond with what we write in Romans as well.

In his commentary on Romans 8, Warren Wiersbe calls Romans 8 “The Christian’s Declaration of Freedom” and outlines 4 freedoms we enjoy as Christians:

  • Freedom from Judgment

  • Freedom from Defeat

  • Freedom from Discouragement

  • Freedom from Fear

While I don’t often use commentaries, Wiersbe’s summary is both helpful and memorable as I read through Romans 8. I hope it is helpful to you as you meditate on the freedom from sin and death we have through Christ.
