Love Covers a Multitude of Sins

1 Peter 4:8 says, “Above all, keep loving one another earnestly since love covers a multitude of sins.” Proverbs 10:12 says, “Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.”
And of course, we have Noah passed out drunk and his sons covering him up, in fact, covering themselves up even, so they can back out of the room without seeing him naked.
The point is, love is patient, love is kind….. and love provides cover. There is of course a time to squeal from the rooftops and make a great fuss, I’m just saying that 99% of the time, our petty complaints about other people don’t need to be spoken about. This is especially true in the social media age, where privacy is no longer valued, honor is swirling the drain, and the politics of personal destruction are all the rage. The thing is, just because it’s popular and culturally endorsed, doesn’t make it right. Love is supposed to cover a multitude of sins.
Somebody smart once said, “the real test of Christianity isn’t how well you love Jesus, but how well you love Judas.” I really like that! So true. Jesus is easy to love, so easy that sometimes even non-believers will proclaim he was a good person, a wise teacher. The Bible even tells us, “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.” It goes on to say, “Love your enemies……without expecting anything back.“
That part about not expecting anything back is so critical, because a good part of offense, betrayal, and hurt, has to do with our expectations not being met. We were let down because we expected something, possibly even something quite reasonable. Sometimes it helps to admit you had needs and to then identify what those needs were. If you can do that, you can then proceed to heal and to ask God for those needs to be met, in other places, under different circumstances.
I struggle with this sometimes which is awesome, it means I care about what Jesus teaches, it means discernment is important to me. It’s kind of like the song, “The Gambler,” know when to hold them, know when to fold them, and know when to walk away and when to run. LOL, you also have to know when to stand your ground and fight back, but we won’t go there right now.
I just want to say, love covers a multitude of sins and I’m often sitting on a stack of 14 pillows just trying to keep my balance and keep the lid down. I struggle with not snapping at the “woke” church. I struggle with not snapping at the “unwoke,” downright comatose church. I struggle with not snapping at the church of the blind pharisee over in-state yonder. I have to pray about each and every one of these things and ask the Lord about them. He really does respond, He really does lead me in the right direction. (Ha! I can’t promise I always hear Him correctly or that I follow His lead right, but I do listen.)
The church overall often makes me crazy because I have such a need for us to reach a lost and hurting world, and yet when I look around I just see a whole lot of people trying to sell books, trying to get on TV, or trying to become performers. Then we have those who think the solution is just political and we have others who think the church is just a social justice platform. And of course, we have those who just want to go along to get along and not be disturbed while they nap through the sermon.
What I don’t get to see very often is people who want to serve a lost and hurting world.
